  1. The audio on a SVCD I encoded using TMPGenc is slightly distorted, with a tinny, ringing sound after speech or music. I used Pinnacle Studio DV to edit captured video, created an AVI (16 bit stereo, 32,000 Hz), and ran the AVI through the SuperVCD template in TMPGenc.

Also, the audio on a mpg-1 file I encoded with Studio DV sounds fine (though I wasn't happy about the video). But, the audio on a mpeg-1 file I created through the VCD-NTSC TMPGenc template has the same tinny distortion (though the picture seems to be better). I'm very pleased with the video of the SuperVCD mpeg-2 file TMPGenc created, but, as I said, the audio stinks.

I'm really stumped, because the video/audio settings of the original captured video (which Studio DV processed to create the good-sounding mpeg-1) and the avi file (used by TMPGenc) are identical.

Any suggestions? Thank you. I'm pretty new to this but the help this forum has offered has been invaluable.

It is because you convert 32kHz to 44,1kHz. TMPG's audio encoder isn't that good to do this job well. Use tooLAME instead. After install select it in TMPG as external tool.

Thanks. I'll try that. In the meantime, I found a workaround. I used mpeg tools in TMPGenc to merge the mpeg-2 video stream with the good audio from my Studio DV mpeg-1 file and it worked great. If nothing else, I'm thinking from now on I could use Studio DV to encode a video-only AVI to later encode to mpeg-2 in TMPGenc, and Studio DV to encode an audio-only mpeg-1, and merge them later in TMPGenc.

ive had a similar problem. every time someone talks, or shouts (most noticeable with female voices) they sound like they're in a baked bean can. i think it has something to do with AC3, as ordinary stereo mpeg's sound fine when converted by tmpgenc, at 192kbps, as did a stereo-only DVD at 192kbps, but when encoding 5.1 movies to 192kbps, the centre, or speech channel becomes distorted. i assume this must be something to do with dvd2avi not demuxing(?) them properly.
