I am having the same problem. Any subtitles that are naturally part of the movie do not show up after i have ripped a DVD (either with smartripper or cladDVDxp). There has to be a way around this. Please help us! Example movies are The Mummy, Men In Black, Legally Blonde. All subtitles that you would see as part of the movie are missing. Very frudtrating!!

Just curious guys ....what aspect ratios/ settings are you using in TMPG....those subs are usally in the black section of the wide screen band arn't they??
-
The subs that are missing are actually part of the picture, not in the black bars. After ripping the DVD i've previewed in DVD2AVI and the subs are missing, also when previewing in any other prog including tMPG. They just seem to disapear!?!?

Play the ripped VOB with PowerDVD to see if they are there. Should be. I use DVD Decrypter most of the time and never had a problem.

I'm having the same problem with the movie "Birthay Girl". They sometimes speak in Russian in the movie and the subtitles are supposed to come up regardless of if you've set the subtitles on or off. I watched the DVD and the subtitles would show up in english automatically whenever someone would start speaking russian but after ripping the DVD with SmartRipper and playing the VOBs with PowerDVD I couldn't get those subtitles anymore?! I don't know what to do

I agree. Playing the vobs after ripping shows that the subtitles are missing on the my movies as well. There must be a way as all my downloaded divx dvd rips have these "in-built" subtitles in them. Can someone PLEASE help us!

OK. For the few of us out there who don't have this understood, I think I may have a solution. I have just successfully ripped 'The Mummy' with the subtitles that show up when they speak ancient egyptian. I played the DVD on my PC using PowerDVD 4 XP and then right clicked and chose subtitles from the menu. I noticed that the subtitles were switched on but it was the english 5 stream that was selected (on my standalone player this was subtitle stream 17). All I did was rip that particular subtitle stream and encoded it into my movie permanently. Hey presto! The subtitles appear when needed when watching the movie. I use DVD2SVCD to create CVD's and using this program makes this method extremely easy. To do it another way I suppose you would just find the relavent subtitle stream and then follow one of the brilliant guides on the left of this website.
I also ripped 'We Were Soldiers' and the subtitles were already encoded into the movie so no problems there.
In summary:
If the embeded subtitles do not show up when you rip the DVD, just check the different subtitle streams and you might find it hiding there.
Hope this helps.Eat! Drink! Be merry! Tomorrow we snuff it! - (Sid James, from 'Hancock's Half Hour') -
how did you encode it? as a subtitle stream? or on the video? There has to be a way to force a subtitle stream to on.
-
hey guys,
what you think may be embedded may not be (just cuz it's on the movie screen and not in the black bars below...actually, even the regular subs that you can turn on and off also appear in the actual movie)
2 examples:
traffic....those supposedly "embedded" subtitles during spanish speaking scenes are not hardcoded into the vidoe itself...it is actually a separate subtitle stream that the dvd automatically plays (you have to use vdub/vobsub, flask, etc...to get the subtitle)
joy luck club...exact same situation with the mandarin speaking scenes...the subtitles aren't hardcoded...but in separate stream -
poopyhead is right. thats what happened with the Mummy.
When i found which stream it was i hardcoded it into the video stream as permament subtitles using dvd2svcd. They are always there now. The hard part is findng which stream these subtitles are in.
Once you realise that not all subtitles are permament it makes your job easier.
In conclusion:
1. The occasional subtitles are already embedded.
This is great. You just encode as normal.
2. The occasional subtitles are in a seperate stream.
This can be tested as follows.
a) Play the DVD in a standalone and switch off the subtitles (you may have to flick through until it says off, depending on your model). If they disappear then there's your answer. Play around until you find the right stream again.
b) Use PowerDVD or WinDVD and start playing the DVD. Go to the subtitle menu (usually by right clicking) and look to see which stream is already selected, then rip that one in dvd2svcd.
I don't know how to do subtitles any other way apart from dvd2svcd but seeing as how this is really easy i'm just going to stick with that method.
If anybody needs further info, send me a private message and i'll go into more detail.
Happy Subtitling!
