I am having problems opening avi videos with TMPGEnc and was going to download the DivX codecs and was warned that they are not guarenteed to work with Windows XP. Also that it may create some problems with my audio and video setup and files. Have other users running Windows XP had any problems using the codecs or should I go ahead and install them?

Let me guess, the AVI is encoded in 3.11 or 4 and you only installed DivX 5, right? Yes, they work under XP. If you're trying to open an avi with specific version of DivX, you need to install the same codec you used to encode the avi. Meaning that if you have DivX5 installed, even though it will play all your DivX content, it will not let you open the avi files from version 3.11 or 4.** using only the DivX 5 codec. You need to install the corresponding version in order for encoder (TMPGEnc mainly) to open the avi file without a problem
