Are you encoding the VOB directly in Tmpeg?? DVD2AVI us a frameserving tool that creates a d2v and audio file that can be opened and encoded in Tmpeg.

its for the audio, yes it is needed.....if you read the HOW TO GUIDES
on the left of this page in green,it will show you how to use it -
It says it's needed if ur going to encode with TMPGEnc coz it wont open all the VOB files

Its not absolutely necessary to use dvd2avi but its an extremely good idea. If you have multiple vob files you can frameserve them all at once in dvd2avi. Also it allows stream processing, so you can decode or demux any one or all of your audio streams. The most important function of dvd2avi is forced film. With ntsc dvds this allows you to preserve the original progressive film. By taking advantage of this and encoding in ntscfilm you increase your quality by %20 or decrease your filesize by
%20 and maintain the same level of quality, your pick. Also since your source is progressive this removes all interlacing issues. -

beautiful alone
I've been encoding in Tmpeg directly fom the ripped VOB files for months. I think the results are "better" than frame-serving. -
so..basicly DVD2AVI is to make all the .VOB files that you riped from Smartripper, and then turn them into 1 big .VOB?

No dvd2avi doesnt actually do anything to your vob files it simply feeds them to the encoder. It basically says, hey TMPGenc look here take these 5 vobs and accept them as if they were 1 vob.
