    Hey guys,

I am using virtualdub to rip Pal vids, now when I rip bought videos they work fine at 25fps rarely dropping a frame. but when I try to rip copied videos it only captures at about 17 fps. Does anyone know why this is the case?

Also, i tried catching ntsc because my VCR can play them, It doesn't work, I can't get it into ntsc mode! Does anyone know do you have to switch the mode on the actual computer?

    cheers

  2. Hmm...your VCR plays NTSC, so it's a PAL vcr right ?

You should select NTSC in the captureboard driver to make it work. Not all translations made by VCR's are according to standard. Do you have a multinorm television ? Otherwise you cannot watch a NTSC movie anyway...

VHS system is the same for both systems, only speed and color registration is different.

As for the copied tapes...maybe it has something to do with macrovision copyprotection or a bad quality signal.

    Good luck.

to "Rip" Pal Videos, I guess you just mean capture, which is capturing just fine on ones you bought, if anything they would have Macrovision not the ones that are copied.

I am guessing that the copied videos are much more poor quality, but even so, your capture software should still maintain 25fps but may drop frames if there is a lot of noise. ?

Your VCR can play NTSC, but does it output them to PAL for your TV ?, not all players output NTSC If you play a NTSC tape does it look black and white in your capture card, if not, then your VCR is outputting PAL

Your capture card will have the NTSC settings, only if its capable of working with NTSC, go into the settings to see if its there

  5. Yep... I understand that a copy can;t have microvision...but the copies of microvision can be so bad that it bacame a capture problem.

    Bad copies can't be helped.

it doesn't make sense because the video plays nice and smoothly (appears to be 25fps) and as soon as I hit the capture button it goes all jolts and drops like 8 frames a second?

But on all my bought videos it captures at 25?

Even a brand new blank video (high quality) which i taped rage it does the same?

  7. hmmm.. as i heard someone say...

this is a case for teh X-files then...

there must be something different in those tapes. If you play on preview wuthout capturing...is the image ok then ? If it is not, it has something to do with the signal. If it is, but grows bad during capture I cannot explain.

    Anyone any ideas ?

  8. I have simmilar problems with this before I upgraded drivers for my TV card. But even now, I have problems with bad tapes - it is obviously something with signal from VCR to TV card.
In one case, VirtualDub droped over 100 frames per minute while I capture video from really bad tape.

Try to capture from TV signal - if everything is fine, it is very possible that VCR signal from that tpae is too weak.

Also, try another capture program - i used AVI_IO which droped 300 frames for entire 76 min. video that VDub wont' process at all (as I said, had 100 droppped frames per minute).

Also, check this for details: http://www.lukesvideo.com/lowrescapvdub.html

yeah in the preview window it works fine. Smooth as and nice quality. And when i hit capture it just goes all shakey and drops frames. But I capture vid at 25fps on bought videos. I can't make any sense of it!

  10. Turn off preview window before capturing and if nothing helps, try another capture tool.
But, if tape is very bad quality, nothing might help because of poor signal.

As I said, I manage to capture one of very bad quality tapes with AVI_IO only (VirtualDub won't work). Also, I turned preview/overlay off.

Sounds like the copy does not have a very good signal at all, one of those video enhancement boxes should help. They amplify and clean up the signal.

Does your VHS add something to the tape ? index signals ? are you using long play (Slow) use normal for faster recordings but better quality.
