  1. I have a Pioneer DVR-104 and it seems to work fine, burning a 1x DVD-R in about 1hr.

It also formats a DVD-RW in just over an hour.

But dragging files onto it in Explorer takes an age!

How long should a directory containng 3.5GB of data in hundreds of files and numerous directories take to copy from disk to DVD-RW?

I'm using XP, NERO-InCD (I tried DirectCD also).

I'm also using DATASAFE media, could that be the reason?

    thanks

UDF packet writting software is the spawn of satan.

YOu would be MUCH better off to burn an ISO DVD in multisession mode.

I lost alot of disks to UDF packet writters, it crashed closing the disk and I had to eject it and it was ruined.

I have NEVER had a problem adding to a multisession CD-R.

  3. I'll take your advice into consideration but I would still like to know how fast DVD-RW ought to be.

Surely someone out there uses Windows XP and Direct CD and treats the DVD-RW like a floppy disk.

How long, roughly, does it take to drag and drop a load of files to nearly fill a DVD-RW?

I'm just doing a backup of an installation folder, it's 3.5GB and I wasn't expecting it to takes all day, and I mean all day.

1X is around 1 hour. Thus 2X is around 30 mins. 2.4X is around 25 mins.

The DVR-104 does DVD-R on certified media at 2X, or otherwise at 1X. It does DVD-RW at 1X.

DVD-RW packet writing. Hmmm... If you want drag and drop the best technology for that would be DVD-RAM. 1X speed (until Oct. when 2X drives will be released) and more reliable. 3.5 GB would take about 45-50 mins on 1X DVD-RAM.

How long is it taking you?

  5. It can take hours, 4 or 5 maybe.

It seems to slow after a while. Is there a file allocation table limit whereby things have to be shuffled around when >n files have been copied?

What should the capacity be? I assume you have to reformat to get space back from deleted files, this thing thinks it's full at 2.4GB.

I have since quick reformatted and done an ISO image copy in 33 mins.

Seems this UDF (or whatever it is) is a bit too limited for DVD

    Ouch!

DVD-RAM generally uses. UDF 1.5 or 2 for data. No slow downs whatsoever (ie. 4.3 GB 1 hr at 1X, with 2X available in October). Like I've always said, the ideal drag-n-drop technology for data on DVD is DVD-RAM, not Mt. Rainier DVD+RW, or DVD-RW.
