  1. First an apology! As a newbie when I filled out my profile I just skimmed over it not realizing that the forum members needed more exacting information. I have corrected my profile with as specific information as I have.

Using the information given me and reading other information printed here, until my eyes were red, I have finally been able to produce a VCD of my home video tapes that runs correctly in my standalone DVD player.

Using Dazzle, I captured the VHS film at the highest possible MPEG 1 setting. Then I used TMPGEnc to encode it to a VCD format. I used their template for VCD but made one change that seemed to make a major difference in the out come. In “settings” under the “advanced” tab I changed the “Video Arrange Method” to “Center (keep aspect ratio)”. This change eliminated the “blocks” in my final disc. I then used Nero to burn to CD, following the “How To” guide in this forum. Using the above methods I was able to convert a 1gb file to 291mb’s and play it on my DVD player with an image I would say is equal to a VHS tape recorded in LP mode format.

That brings me to my question for the group. My intent was to save my home movies in a quality as close to the original as possible and share them with family. The original film is in a high quality VHS SP mode format. If I were to invest in buying a DVD burner would I be able to record an image closer to the original quality, on a DVD disc?

DVD can produce images much better than VHS - so yes , DVD will produce the very best that is avaiable from the source compared to vcd or svcd ...

svcd will also produce a very good picture quality but if you are concerned with compatability dvd-r is the most compatable ..
