I have some old Mpeg1 streams that I want to put on a dvd. I know that Mpeg1 at 352x240 is a supported dvd format but I have no idea about the supported audio format. The audio on the VCD is Mpeg1-II audio but the Dvd Demystified faq says that at least one audio stream needs to be in AC3 format (on a dvd.) Is that just for Mpeg2 video streams or for Mpeg1 video streams as well? I know my player will play them either way but I want to make these dvd's standard so that all players will be able to play them. I just want to make sure before I go and convert all the audio streams to AC3.

    Thanks.

Dvd Demystified -- hmm dont know where they got that info because it is wrong -- you dont need 1 stream of ac3 .. you dont need any audio at all in fact but pcm or mpeg.audio or dts only will work also ..

for mpeg1 on a dvd -- exactly the same hold true ..

I believe that what "the book" means, is at least one track has to have a standard audio format, be it AC3, LPCM or MPA (MPG1-Layer II). It cannot be entirely DTS or SDDS or other specialized audio tracks.

But, hey, I'm probably just like the rest of you... I don't have access to the real DVD spec.

As for Lance's original question, there is no specific audio requirement for MPEG1 video, except that the maximum audio rate is 384kbps.
