i have a mpeg-1 file that is ready to burn to a vcd. but i need to split it up so it will fit on 2 disks. since i can no longer do mpeg-1 edting in QT6, does anyone know any other programs where i can split this mpeg file? if possible, i want to avoid converting to a new format, splitting, then going back to mpeg-1 vcd. any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Did quicktime 5 work with splitting mpeg files?

Search the forum for split to find another topic on this. The only successful method I've found so far (on os X) is this. First, demux the file using mpgdemux (mpgtx). Then use mplex in missingmpegtools (really the mplex command line utility) to mux the streams again. In here you can set the max size each file can be in megs. In the GUI just check 'force segment' and enter the size that can fit on your blank cd. If the file doesn't work, you may want to redo it WITHOUT the -M option. The -M option forces a split without building the run-in/run-out sequences. This will require running it from the command line I believe.

I have tried mpgsplit from mpgtx and that produced corrupted files for me, as did an os 9 splitting utility.

MissingMpegTools can be found on versiontracker.com.

  3. I use the cli tool 'mpgcut' which is an older version of the mpeg toolbox split app. It works just fine without the corruption issues since it always cuts at a GOP boundary (just make sure you aren't using a GOP setting above 15 or so and it will cut most footage the way you want it).
Slaughtering the competition with amatuer-quality VCD authoring abilities... fear my non-l33t skillz.

  4. Where can you get the older version? I was able to find an os 9 mpegcut that didn't work either. I'd be happy to find anything that could split an mpeg file at a specific point!

  5. I used an OSX app called mpgtxwrap to split mpeg files. It seems to work fine although I haven't yet turned the mpeg sections into VCDs or SVCDs. The files do play in Quicktime and Video LAN though so they are probably fine.

    Give this app a shot.

  6. I'll try this out. I've tried it and the mpgtx tools it uses but they've never worked to split files for me. If they work for you then perhaps it gets confused splitting vcd compatible mpg files? I've had success using mpgcut (a command line tool) to cut files but I haven't been able to join anything.

Have you tried splitting vcd compliant mpgs with that tool? Try demuxing with mpgtx and remuxing an mpeg file with missing mpeg tools (mplex) with the vcd option set.

TMPGEnc cuts mpgs very easily. Just click File>MPG Tools>Merge & Cut. Takes 5 min. for each half of the movie, with no quality loss.

  8. If you don't mind doing it using a PC instead of Mac, you can try the Merge&Cut Tool in TMPGEnc.

    1. Copy the file to harddrive.
    2. Rename .dat to .mpg
    3. Add as MPEG-1 VCD Compliant in Merge&Cut(MPEG Tools)
    4. Edit (Cut The Section By Defining Start & End Point)
    5. Browse a Output Filename and Run

now i seriously think whoever moderates this forum should delete all the stupid pc posts.. uhh if u can use a pc instead of a mac then do this... i mean did any of these geniuses read the sticky that says "dont post uhh i dont know with mac but heres the pc answer" i mean why are pc people even reading a MAC forum.. i mean are they so pyschologically repressed about wanting a better computer that they have to read our forum too?

  11. The latest forum posts appear on the vcdhelp.com homepage so everyone, including PC people, can read the subjects and click to reply, possibly without realizing that it is a mac forum post.

  12. Didn't realize we are not supposed to post any PC related information in Mac forum. I suggest VCDHELP to separate it into 2 forums. Mac people won't accept anything other thing other than Mac. It's more like a cult rather than info sharing session.

why would PC information be helpful to mac user if they dont have a PC? i mean i would just assume its common sense that PC information won't help us.. i mean maybe my harsh tone wasnt necessary but im sick of reading through these answers only to see half of them useless for the people asking the questions, your dont see the flipside happening, people going into pc forums and answering with mac programs... , so theres no reason it should happen here.

Jaw Mpeg2splitter can handle mpeg-1 files (I don't see why not muxed ones). So it may be worth a try.

  15. I believe you can bump into a PC easily anywhere (probably that's a turn-off to Mac people as it's a sign of dictatorship of WinTel). You can run a freeware /shareware(TMPGEnc) easily and legally at your friend's place (I assume you can at least find a friend who owns a PC) or computer lab at school if you are student or even CyberCafe to perform this simple task on the needy basis. You don't need to buy a PC and pay a lot to M$ just to cut a .dat file. At least you realize there is a solution out there which you might want to consider if you just want to use once in a while without having to substantiate the wealth of M$.

I appeciate the PC related information as I can usually use it in VPC. In particular, TMPGenc runs well in VPC and is simple to use and is very useful. It's odd that there is such a lack of easy to use Mac tools for all of this. I guess Mac users employ higher end video tools ?

but if there is a way to do something on a mac w/o use of VPC then of what use is PC advice.. i could understand if its some complex task that we dont yet have the software totally at our disposal (i.e ifo or vobedit) but a fundamentally simple task like splitting or joining mpegs together shouldnt make a user go out of their way to do it on someone elses PC when u can do it right at home with free tools we have.. maybe they arent as good as the PC tools but they work fine.

True, but the splitting issue, as well as creating a pseudo VCD disk (say to play in a DVD player which doesn't support SVCD, has sometimes (for me) been impossible using Mac tools while TMPGEnc has worked great and easily .
