  1. Is it normal to be dropping 23 frames in the first 12min. of capturing? This is my first time trying to capture video.

  2. I am interested too to find out what is consider acceptable loss as today I was using Virtualdub for the first time and I noticed I lost more frames than I would have liked. I rebooted and it was much better.

But from some info I saw it said that sometimes frames need to be lost to keep the sound in sync so that could be the reason.
Not only am I perfect but I'm Canadian too!

Frame loss should not be acceptable at all, 1 in 1000 is not so bad but if it needs to drop frames to keep up with the audio, then its not going to be very good is it ?

if that capture is then put on a VCD, or used later to convert, that's when all the problems start, playback of these files will always look good, even if lots of frames were dropped.

I have a very basic capture card, its so basic it has HMV stamped on it however when capturing at VCD .mpg it never drops a single frame. Capturing at the limit of your card/pc could be causing this problem.

If the frame loss is at the start, it could be the system settling down to the capture, so as long as there is no other frame loss, that should be just fine, just start the capture a little earlier.

  4. Thanks I think I got it. It would drop 3 frames when I started and a couple more when I cut out the commercials on the tape. I'm capturing some old Beavis and Butt-Heads that I recorded a long time ago.
