  1. I just bought an Apex 1100w and the kodak label was white with a yellow kodak sticker on the top and i saw the picture of the dvd players and its said dvd/vcd/mp3/cd players. They had a lot of 'em but all the other had the yellow emplem on it but it wasnt a stickers. the only one with a sticker on it was teh one i got. Well, I bought the damn thing today during lunch. Have yet to go home and test it. Hopefully itll be a good one. If not, ill just return it. the damn thing was only 68 bucks so : ). Also i wanted to ask, can someone recommend a good dvd player besides apex 1500 or 1100w? if worst comes to worst ill just order one off the internet like i said its only 68 bucks.

    Thanks in advance,

    me

Sometimes people see the word "VCD" and think great it will play the disks I make. However all that is telling you is, that it will play commercial VCD's, they are pressed not burned.

If the DVD spec also said CDR\CDR-W and VCD then you know there is a better chance it will play the disks. However there is no guarantee that the same model will play them. Firmware upgrades, modifications, can make a model that did work stop working

You need to take a disk into the shop and say "Play this, and Il buy it"

  3. Youre probably right. I saw the reviews for this dvd players and damn near all of 'em were godly. I figured id go look for one and give it a try. Now, if it doesnt work ill just return the damn thing and get my money bakc. So far ive bought an apex 1100w and a 1500 and the 1500 gave me an "no disc" when i try to play a vcd. Hopefully ill have better luck with this new one. I also saw a good rca that stated on the box that it played cdr/cdrw etc, but its 149. I think if this apex doesnt work ill go ahead and buy one from like amazon or something. If you know of any good dvd players id appreciate some input. Im new at this and i just started converting some of my movies to vcd now all i need is someting to play 'em on : )

    Thanks in advance

  5. I bought an Apex 1100W the other day. I am very happy with it. Plays VCD, SVCD, KVCD (everything I have tried). I used the info available in the DVD Hacks and DVD Players sections over to the left to get the 1MB unit (whatever that means).

The thing looks nice but if you look close it seems to be cheaply made (that's how they can sell it so cheap). Because it is small and light I think it is a good unit for taking with you when you visit friends or relatives who don't have a DVD player that plays your CD's.

  6. Be aware the Apex 1100 does not play DVD-R's, also may want to look at the daewoo 5800 its $89 at Sam's club and it plays DVD, DVD-R(with 5700 macrovison/DVD-R hack), VCD, SVCD, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW and any VCD or SVCD up tp 7000 bitrate even recorded at 704x480.
The AKAI at Sams plays the sam thing as the daewoo 5800, but its $99 and I do not know if there is a hack for this model.
The Sampo 631CF does all this plus will play any Compact Flash memory card and the hack not only disables macrovison but the Serial Copy Mangment also so it will work with any Home DVD recorder but its $169.

All Apex players manufactured after 15th April 2002 do not play VCD. It seems Philips are tightening up on the licencing arrangements, and some manufacturers have decided they don't want to pay for the facility to play VCD. 8)

In the long run, it does not pay to buy cheap. Sometimes they work OK to start with but later give problems. I always use to buy Philips but these days would only buy Sony.

The Sony player I have listed will play just about anything and is very good quality, but much more expensive than the rest. I bought it online with a chip fitted to disable marovision and its multi region.

    The 300 has problems !

  11. I have the 1100W. A GREAT player! Good choice.

Presto, when people say 1mb unit they mean the 1100W version which has a 1mb rom chip. There are two versions of the player, the 1mb rom chip version and the 512k rom chip version.

I think I might be tempted to buy Philips, because at least they don't have to pay themselves for any license to play different formats. Although I am sure Sony produce the highest quality equipment, I would check first (as you did) 8) that a specific player plays all the formats I was interested in, and that it also play CDR and CDRW. I see many reports of problems with Sony in these respects.

The reason many of us buy cheap is because it is often the cheapest players that play the most formats, and accept the most types of disc. I am told it is because they are based around cheap PC DVD drives, although I don't know if that is correct.

It doesn't matter which version you get if it was manufactured after 15th April. It will not play VCD. 8)

I'm sorry but I 'll have to disagree with you on the fact that the 1100 doesn't play dvd-r. I've had one for about 2 months(so it was probably made before apex stop supporting vcd) and it has played everything I stick in it. I got a dvr-104 and have burnt about 13 dvds. I did have a problem with playing dvd's authored dvdit!pe. But dvd's Authored with DVD WORKSHOP and SPRUCEUP play fine.
First I'm using the branded dvd-r from meritline.com . I rip to .m2v with smartripper. I change the bitrate with rempeg(if needed). Then I author with Dvd Workshop or Spruceup(Most of the time) . I Create a title set and burn with nero. Works all the time. I did waste 3 dvd-r's trying to author with dvdit.

And the ones that give the most problems, and the ones that only last half the time of the more expensive players.

I think you are probably right. I bought a cheap Cyberhome because it was supposed to play everything. It does, but not very well, unfortunately. I've gone back to my old Pioneer 535 which only plays fully compliant VCD and SVCD, but it does so really well.
