  1. How can I cut my MPEG1 video into segments? I've tried using TMPGEnc, but it gets my audio very badly out of sync with the video. I just want to cut an MPEG1 file at 4.6 Mbps CBR into logical chapters. Are there any free programs that can do this correctly? I would use one of the various demos listed on the downloads page, but they all restrict you to useless amounts of video...they're not going to get my money with crappy "evaluation" versions like that...

I think M2 edit is very good for editing Mpeg files.

  4. I downloaded and tried using VCD Cutter 4.04, but it causes skipping in the first few seconds of clips, sort of a slideshow, and then stabilizes. The video being cut is 2.3 Mbps CBR. Do you experience this with 4.01, or is it possibly a bug introduced into 4.04? If I can't get rid of that oddity, it simply won't be acceptable.

As for M2 edit, I had already tried their demo version, which restricted me to something like 10 sec. of video. Some kind of "evaluation" version that is...

  5. After a little more experimentation, a few more details...
VCDCutter 4.01 and 4.03 produce the same result. When the MPEG file being cut is 2.3 Mbps CBR, with VideoCD characteristics (created by ATI MMC 7.1), the problem happens. When the VideoCD characteristics are disabled, the problem doesn't happen, but VCDImager 7.8 doesn't like the file and pads it. Why in the world would a product designed specifically for VCD MPEG file cutting not understand a (X)VCD compliant MPEG stream correctly??? Is there any possible way to fix this problem???
