  1. Please excuse the repost - I posted with the wrong subject before and I realised that may lead to people ignoring the post...

    Hi,

I am using the following software to convert a PAL DVD to a VCD (I have an Aiwa XD-DV480 DVD player):

    Smartripper
    DVD2AVI
Tempenc (sp?) (highest quality, simple colour correction, sharpen edges)
    VCDEasy

Following the basic guide found here - I got good rips but I could hear a slight metallic sound in the audio. After researching this (on this forum) I discovered that this was due to the 48KHz to 44.1KHz conversion in Tempenc (sp?). I then tried using DVD2AVI to convert the audio to 44.1KHz using "High" quality. The resulting VCD gradually slips out of sync on my standalone DVD player. If I hit pause and then resume, everything appears to be back in sync...

    Any ideas ?

    Many thanks,

    Gareth

    Hi,

Turn off the sample convertion within DVD2AVI and use an external converter from within tempgenc - I use ssrc which is regarded as one of the best - you will notice that tmpgenc supports this by just pointing the external tool to the ssrc.exe executable (option, environment, external, sample freq converter).

PS - Download it from doom9.org if you haven't got it... lots of other tools there as well.

    Should solve your sync probs..

Have you tried converting the audio to a WAV file using VirtualDub?

  5. try demuxing the ac3 audio stream from dvd2avi and then process it seperatly with Besweet (from doom9) it's a great program, a bit tricky to use first time round but the results are excellent.

or just tell tempenc to use ssrc (as allready suggested) and 2lame as the audio encoder

The results are much better than using tempencs internal routines...

  6. Thanks for all the replies. I can't seem to find 2lame or ssrc at doom9 (maybe I am missing something or maybe they have been removed). Does anybody know somewhere else to download them ?

    Thanks,

    Gareth

  7. Found the tools thanks - trying them now...

As an aside - why would the sync get worse and worse and then be fine again after I hit pause (on my DVD player that is) ?

    Thanks,

    Gareth

So are you saying that when you used DVD2AVI to do the 48 to 44.1 KHZ conversion you didn't have a problem anymore with the metalic sound? Instead you had a weird sync problem?

Most people complain about TmpegEnc's tinniness or metalic artifacts at low quality 128 kbit/sec and below. I didn't realize that maybe it could be the downgrading of sampling and not the bitrate.

Did you decode to a .wav or mpg file in DVD2AVI? It should be uncompressed .wav out of DVD2AVI or else it will get encoded twice. Once in DVD2AVI and once later in TmpegEnc. That might be the problem.

  10. gda72,

have you tried your VCD's in another DVD player? Have you tried
downloading a trial copy of nero and used that instead of vcdeasy?

  11. Hi,

I was using DVD2AVI to give me a 44.1K wav file. This eliminated teh metallic noise (caused by Tempenc doing the downsampling) but gave me a "weird" sync problem.

I haven't tried nero - but I haven't had any problems with vcdeasy for other mpg files (ones I created from vhs a couple of years ago)...

With the other tools (2lame and ssrc) the sync problem and metallic noise seem to have gone away (although I am paranoid about sync problems).

As an aside - I even seemed to have a sync problem when I used the inbuilt tempenc 48 -> 44.1 conversion.... Don't understand this one.

BTW - I was ripping Blackadder series 2 if that has any significance.

    Thanks,

    Gareth

Worth checking that your video frame rate is correct (25 fps for PAL) - otherwise doesn't really matter if your audio is perfect - the video will be out of sync. Are you trying to do any NTSC to PAL conversion - or is it a straight PAL DVD to PAL VCD ?

  13. Hi,

    Definately PAL to PAL...

  14. Hi,

More info now... I tried with FlaskMpeg and Panasonic Plugin...I get the exact same sync issue. Is it possible that my DVD player does not like PAL VCDs ? I know I have some NTSC ones I created before that play fine.

I suppose I will try PAL to NTSC conversion - sounds a bit hard....

    Thanks,

    Gareth
