  1. I am finding if I create ((S)VCD's using Center (Full Screen) or Center, and then play them on my TV, the image is slightly larger than the TV can show resulting in small parts of the picture being lopped off at the sides. No problem playing the PC. So to get over that I usually use Center (Custom size) and resize the image down (take off 16 pixels off the horizontal and vertical resolution) so that when played on my TV the image looks about the same size as when broadcast.

    Anybody else experience this?

All tv's do this, its called overscanning. If you playback the original dvd you'll see that it does the exact same thing. Broadcast tv is the same also. You may think you are getting the whole picture but some of it is still being cut off. This is done specifically for broadcast tv I believe, to ensure that the picture completely fills the screen.

Some tv's overscan more than others but when the movie is filmed/encoded those involved obviously know to account for it so its not like your going to miss anything important.

If you really want those extra pixels than I suppose you dcan do what you did, but I think you may be messing up the aspect ratio. Most people just crop and add borders over those pixels. You still don't see them but your encoder now has less pixels to encode so the quality is improved slightly. There's no point in encoding what your not going to see.

Yes, indeed, burned (S)VCD's are cropped by TV sets. This is due to the fact that both VCD and SVCD standards define a resolution smaller than NTSC and PAL standard resolutions. Originally, both VDC and SVCD standards "took into account" the fact that TV sets don't display full image size. Practically, the image is being cropped any how in TV sets.

Praise to you for finding the solution to this phenomenon.

    Take care
