I ripped a DVD, re-encoded with TMPEGEnc, and when I play the .mpg file with my ATI File Player, it looks good and the audio is in synch.
When I burn it to a DVD, the video lags from time to time and the audio is off-synch. What is up?

things to check for:
frame rate correct?
was original interlaced or progressive and was tmpgenc set up correctly for this?
top or bottom field first (only if interlaced source)?
bit rate go over max?
audio not exactly 48khz ?
also on a dvd - a really good authoring program will offset the audio track anyway .. and you can do your self on some . that is if its the same throughout .. -
I am not really an advanced user, and I have made many successful DVDs. I am just not understanding how the MPEG2 file can be perfect and the DVD isn't. (isn't it just burning the MPEG2 file onto the Disc?)

also, I tried all kinds of media. -

which program did you use to author? which to burn and did you try playaback under powerdvd 4.0. -
I authored with Ulead DVD factory/studio and I put the disc into my set-top (a panasonic that always works great.)

a PC is very forgiving -- frame rates can be off and other such things. a dvd player stand alone is not to forgiving ... plus added to the fact it is playing off a disk not a file so there is another factor thrown in ..

one reason I suggested Power DVD is to check playback before burning, that's what I do to check the audio sych. It's the authroing or encoding that can be off. If it's the encoding and you lose synch from the beginning, adjust the lag under the Settings----Advanced---Source. I usually render a small segment to check for audio synch issues. If none are present then I render the entire movie, if it plays back fine under Mediaplayer, then I author, after I author I check the authored VOBs with Power DVD to see if the playback fine, especially towards the end of a movie. -
when I use the Playback Simulation in Ulead DVD MovieFactory it looks and sounds good. any other theories, this is driving me nuts! I used to make perfect copies when I was burning to CD, why is this so much different?

generally I have found if playback is good under DVD Movie Factory or DVD Workshop, then generally on burn, playback will be good, however I usually author to VOB from either of the 2 programs and then check with Power DVD to see if playback is good, that's why I never burn from either of the 2 programs ( prefering to use Nero instead ), I used to until I got the synch issues, however patching up with the 15Mb patch seems to have cured any audio synch issues that either program makes when authoring.
