  1. Since my first HD died within 3 months of purchasing (before I got into all this authoring and burning stuff) - I was wondering if it's possible to actually wear out a HD by constant authoring?

I'm frame serving from Premiere into TMPGenc to create MPEG2 using Rui's guide - so everything is maxed out. Since it's constantly having to jump back and forth all over the HD I was wondering if this could cause it to fail early?

I've read elsewhere on here that it's a good idea to have a separate drive to write to, but I can't quite afford it yet. Has anyone ever had any problems or am I just paranoid?!

    Thanks

Any device will suffer from infant mortality, and HDs are no exception. However, servers with HDs seem to run all the time and the accessing can be rather high.

I doubt that your problem is due to "excessive" authoring.

  3. Just to echo the last reply - I have a Tivo, and it's on 24x7, it has a video buffer that is continually writing to (hard drive clicks every second of every day). The hard drive in there has been in service for over a year with no problems. The stepper motor for the heads is designed for just this kind of service. Premature failure could be caused by excessive heat with inadequate airflow around the hard disks. You can pick up a special fan assembly for hard drives which may solve your problem in the future.

    Cheers,
    TJD
