I just bought my Pioneer DVR-AO4. Everytime i try to burn DVD-R or even CD-R, it says "communication failure" and then it will fail. I use the latest Nero. It reads just fine, but burning makes me mad. Please help me, or otherwise i will sink that fu*king device in the pond in my backyards.

  2. What else is on that eide cable? Is the drive set to master, slave, or cable select? Can you play a dvd? Can you see anything on a disk with data on it? More info please!

Give us your computer hook-up data. Most likely, you have a hardware config problem.

Also, don't toss the thing into the pond. Box it up and send it to me (COD, of course). I will be more than happy to have another one of these drives (and the price on this one can't be beat!)

AO4 is set as a secondary master, a Samsung DVD is hooked in the same IDE-cable. Both works in DMA2 mode.

I can play DVDs & CDs and it reads just fine. Only the burning process fails. There's no written data in the disc after "burning".

Make sure your Samsung DVD is set to SLAVE on the secondary channel. If it is, try disconnecting it and try burning again. Something is trying to grab the channel's attention while you are burning. The only clue I have is that it is the Samsung.

  6. You have to set UDMA to PIO mode. Had the same problem, WinXP put my A04 to UDMA mode2, gor communication failure both in Nero and My DVD.

    Hi Apko,

I had the exact same problem ;( , but now it's solved

    Let me explain ,

I have two hard disk's on my primary IDE, and on the second channel I have the Pioneer DVR 104 ( Master ), and LG 16 X DVD ( Slave ).
What I have found is that before I used my UDMA VIA drivers , everything was okay , but after that I could only record 100% success using the On- the fly option ( recording using the same secondary channel , meaning from the LG "slave" to the Pioneer "Master" directly )!

When I used the images either from C: (Hard disk0 -> Master) or D: (Hard Disk 1 -> Slave, all from primary IDE channel), to the Recorder (Pioneer DVR104) on the secondary master device I had the same error as you ( Communication error )!!

The solution after a lot of investigation and testing was :

Installing ( after running the 4 in one VIA drivers ) the IDE VIA filter, that tool will allow you to set the DMA setting that works best for the Pioneer DVR104 / A04 !!

The setting is : Multi Read DMA Mode 2 !!!!

NOTE: Do not use Ultra DMA mode 2 or 1 or 0 , using mode 2 will give those errors , using mode 1 will fix it but you can only record using 1X speed ;(, mode 0 won't work either !

I Hope you can also fix it

BTW what kind of UDMA drivers do you have / Motherboard ??
I used this link to get the IDE filter from VIA :

    http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/IDEFilter120a.zip

    Best Regards,

    FJorgeR.

I installed that tool, but there's still no more options than "dma if available" and "pio". I checked device manager--->ide controller page and the driver was installed.

Well those options aren't avialable on the device manager tab, they are on the tray icon ( that runs on startup ) saying VIA!
Then did you select the Pioneer drive ?? What kind of OS do you have Win2k or Xp? Can you check if your OS is using the BM IDE VIA driver ? Because it's can still be using the original

    Please reply,

    Regards,

    FJorgeR.

BTW does your motherboard as a VIA chipset?

    Opps:

I can't help you there ;( , since I don't have XP installed !! When win2k starts a VIA icon is displayed near the clock , probably it's doesn't support Win XP, nevertheless check the program tab, and look for VIA IDE TOOL, and the run it!
In case of unsuccessful start I think you better post the doubt directly on VIA support , or install Win 2k ;( !!

BTW can you give send me a private message? I need to ask you something ( and I can't do it here because of Forum rules )!

    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    FJorgeR.

Whoa! The A7M266 uses an AMD-761 chipset. I don't think the VIA drivers are going to do much for you there. I'd uninstall those puppies toot-sweet. Try looking here: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_2336,00.html for the correct chipset drivers.

Yeah Whytless is right , I assumed you had a VIA chip set !
Use the latest driver ( it will allow you to change the DMA setting ):

    Good Luck,

    FJorgeR.

    PS:

I noticed a strange behaviour with my LG 16 x drive and it's causing a lot of problems ;( .
When I'm ripping a DVD to an image ( Nero ) usually I get something like 10M/12Mbytes per second to the hard disk, but when by some reason the drive encounters a reading problem ( scratches , dust , etc ) it stops instead of reducing the speed and try again! But even more strange is that Nero continues to read ( like there isn't any problem ) and the DVD it's not running. I assume that the Nero is getting the data from buffer because the ripping speed becomes higher ( 20/22 Mbytes per second )!
What I would like to know is :

What's wrong ? Drive LG DVD 16x ? Nero 5.5.9.0 ?? Via IDE bus ? Or all of them ?

    Any help? Please?

    Thanks,

    FJorgeR
