  2. Freeware, or retail? If retail, how much do you want to spend?
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

AVI_IO is pretty good. Its not free but its not real expensive either.
Do a google search for it.

AVI_IO is great program -- but for capture -- it doesnt encode to mpeg

there are a lot of other encoders -- but cinema craft and tmpgenc and also i have seen some great results from main concept ,.. are the only software encoders i recomend for mpeg2 .. for mpeg 1 , panasonic and tmpgenc ..

for a massive amount of mpeg encoder control and ok results if you spend the time to work out the details is "mpeg repair" ..

  5. i'm not sure exactly what i need,

i'm trying to convert svcd's to dvd, the idea being i can get two films onto the dvd and i won't have to get up and swap discs halfway through the movie (lazy bloke here) so i need a program to demultiplex the .mpg file then another program to re-encode the sound track to 48hz.

although i was wondering if there are any authouring programs that would do the lot for me and would let me just drag and drop the original mpeg file and do the work for me.

any further help would be greatly appreciated

    cheers

  6. bbmpeg is a great (and free) tool for mux/demux
(generally better than tmpg at this)

I'm sure there's a link in the tools section of this site.

It is also an encoder (mpeg1/mpeg2) but the mpeg2
functions are definately not as good as tmpg
