Why does it seem that standard SVCD's suck by comparison to straight SVHS? Videos shown thru the s-video cable out my samsung miniDV camcorder look much better than the svcd's Ive tried to make.
I've captured uncompressed avi with adobe premiere and then converted to SVCD using the standard template available in TMPEG (my DVD player will only play standard SVCD's-cannot raise the bitrate) and the results have macroblocks around moving objects, unacceptable.
I bit the bullet and converted to an XVCD (2500 bit rate) and no macroblocks but of course the excellent resolution I had before is gone, unacceptible.
So, I recorded the same footage from the camcorder onto a SVHS VCR and the results are acceptible. Why? How about using CCE to encode instead of TMPEG, will it make that much of a difference at a standard 2520 SVCD bit rate?
Can you help me understand why, and perhaps resolve my issues?
Once again, I appreciate your help.

i'm just a newbie at this stuff but that seems like alot of trouble just for all this i'd be happy with vcd mpeg 1 quality but i just wanna learn about svcd maybe it's the same for you too and that's why your asking that question but it seemed like you wanted people's opionions instead of an actual answer

If quality is your main concern, then DVD is the only way to go. My chief concern has always been quality - therefore, I experimented with both VCD and SVCD, but, like you, I thought that they pretty much sucked. So, I started converting my old VCR tapes to DVD long before I ever got a recorder. Just back them up on CD-Rs until that day you finally bite the bullet.
If your originals are deteriorating as fast as mine were, then time is of the essence. Both lost and thrown away quality can never be recovered. Therefore, neither lose, nor throw away any quality that you don't have to. But this is my opinion.
