Sorry, I posted the wrong question, I didn't even realize it till your reply, I need to know, can avi file be converted to dvd, the 720 by 480, not the one for svcd 480 by 480, I have looked in that link you showed me and do not see that I can. I have TMPGEnc down loaded and when I try to do that conversion, it says my free time has expired, I don't know what they want, do you? Are they after me to go to their web site and pay the 49.95 to do their upgrade download? And if that is so will I be able to convert to the 720 by 480 dvd grade? I just bought a hp dvd writer 200i and want to put some of my vhs tapes to disc. Thanx for your reply.

hi there, TMPGEnc can produce dvd compliant MPEG-2 files, all you do is simply load the DVD template instead of the usual VCD template (or whatever). If you want to produce DVDs using TMPGEnc then you will have to buy the registered version you mentioned, unless you wanted to download a free 'cracked' version from kazaa or somewhere, but I wouldn't recommend this because it's illegal
As for putting VHS to DVD I'm not sure that this is such a good idea, the quality wouldn't be that great and it would be a waste of (relatively) expensive DVD-Rs, why not just use VCD...much cheaper.

Thanks for the reply, helped me out. I tried to make svcd's, could never seem to get the pic quality very good, was always noticeably worse then the vhs itself, and I even use a svhs, and could rarely get it on one cd-r. The pic always seemed to be jerky, especially when the action started to move quickly in the movie, and parts of the movie the audio would go out of sync. But maybe now that I have different capture software and a different burner, I'll try vcd again. Thanx again.
