  1. First post - found this site very easily & it looks the right place to start. I need some assistance. I am running Windows XP with a no so hot graphics card - ATI 3d Rage II. I have just bought a firewire card to try my hand at video edtiing (nothing fancy just home movies etc). Firstly - I have not bought a capture card as I thought that by using a firewire card this would be OK. Is this correct? If this is not correct it answers the next question:
Secondly - My sony DV camera (Sony PC5E) is recognised in both windows movie maker & Adobe Premier. I can control the camera from the pc with no problems. However, no footage appears on the screen and no frames are captured. Have I missed something really daft? I have set both programs to read form the Sony DV. Thanks in advance!

  2. you can transfert from you cam with a firewire card.
you might want to get the guides to dv transfert from premiere they're very well written and helpfull.
btw you cannot capture with a firewire card (capturing and transfering are not the same thing, a dv cam transfers video thru a firewire card)
i'd love to help you more but each cam works differently usually it's something like you press play on your camcorder in vcr mode and then press record in premiere.

    hope that helps

  3. Cheers so far.
The dv camera is recognised by both Premier & Windows Movie Maker. I can control camera functions from the pc (play, fw, rev stop etx) but no picture or sound appears at all in the preview window (this has not been disabled). I am playing on the dv camera & pressing record in premier & movie maker. No video seen or recorded. I can name the file afterwards, but as no frames captured, all I get is a black screen in WM Player for 1 second before it says "stopped". The problem is getting the video "feed" to appear. Cheers again

    Mic (input)

    yellow av out
    Blue digital i/o.

    Hope this helps.
