    HI,

I got a vcd title .dat file. I tried to load with NERO, but it complained that it was not a MPEG-1. I tried using vcdgear and TMPGENC. Neither will not load the dat file. TMPGENC states that it was an invalid video file when I tried to re-mult to vcd format. When I load with MPEG-1 template, it stated that the file can not be opened or supported. I tried to load with Media Player. It states that there is not enough storage for operation on XP and no filter to render this stream on Win 2000. It onlys load and viewed with my WINDVD player.

Do I need a special codec? I would like to convert this dat file to MPEG-1 and burn to vcd with NERO. Anyone here knows how to do this, what others tools to use or codec to add to my win xp, and why it only plays with WIN 2000?

    Thanks,

    Rage

this dat file only loads with WINDVD...

When I to load with TMPGENC, it get an invalid video stream...or this file format is not supported message...

All vcdgear does is convert from dat to mpeg....
It does not convert it to MPEG-1 format...

Strange it will not load on Media Player or NERO....Only WINDVD...

Please respond if anyone has another option to re-mux to MPEG-1 format.

Have you tried changing the file extension to mpg? Try that and then try to multiplex it using mpeg tools.

  5. I have a similar problem - I have a .dat file that I want to convert to MPEG-1, but VCDGEAR generates 4 mpeg files - only 1 of which is playable but ony 25 seconds long. The other 3 files won't be recognised by anything with the 4th file being the one I need as the file size is about right.

When I try to use TMPGenc and the Merge/Cut option I receive just 1 small file, so I set the start point about 60 seconds in and receive the message "Illegal MPEG video stream". However, when I go to edit the start point I can press the play button and it will play fine!!

    Any ideas from anyone??

    Thanks,

I already suggested one which always works for me.

  7. Use VCDEASY, that has the option to convert your .dat back to mpg...

  9. Thanks guys, but none of your suggestions work!!

I didn't realise that changing the extension to mpg was an option - I assumed that the dat file was in a different format...

banjazzer - when I try to multiplex, after about 1% of the input file is processed I receive the error "5 s packets cause buffer underflow. The MPEG file might cause error when it played".

As I mentioned in my previous post, vcdgear turns out 4 mpg files, 1 of which is of any significant size...but nothing I've tried will read or convert it to anything that's playable.

But, now that I know that I can just change the extension I've managed to play it in Windows media player, and as it turns out, my DVD player will play raw MPEGs (including this renamed file) so I don't have to try to do anything else with it :P

    Thanks again,

It is in a different format, that's where the multiplex stage comes in.

banjazzer - when I try to multiplex, after about 1% of the input file is processed I receive the error "5 s packets cause buffer underflow. The MPEG file might cause error when it played".
I get these error messages occasionally. However I never got any problems after I burned to VCD with Nero. So I think you can safely ignore the error messages, provided the multiplex completes, and the target file is roughly the same size as the source file.

As I mentioned in my previous post, vcdgear turns out 4 mpg files, 1 of which is of any significant size...but nothing I've tried will read or convert it to anything that's playable.
So, did you find 4 .dat files? If so, what happened when you processed them as I suggested?
