  1. Have I any chance to capture larger avi's than ...x288 and maintain my Win98 ? If not , what do I need minimum? (what Windows , what MMC version). Thanks.

  2. ATI dropped support for AVI's larger than x 288 for the 128. You need a new capture card.

Yes, ATI can capture over 288 lines... I have one, under a windows Me (98 upgraded, but tested in win98 without problem) it must be a driver problem... I dont know how to fix it, but when I installed windows 98 from the beginnig, then I installed all windows update from Microsoft website, then directx 8.1, then sound card (because MMC checks its compatibility), then ATI AIW 128 with the original CD drivers and MMC7.1... ALWAYS restarting the computer when installing a new hardware...

afterwards, I installed the remaining hardwares...

I can capture up to 720x480 (ATI VCR option)...

I think I was misunderstood... I can capture 720x480 AVI file using the MMC built in VCR ...

If I capture using VirtualDub, I can capture up to x 576 lines... in theory, because my duron 800 cannot hold to high, but the option is there!

MMC 7.1 cannot capture in VCR format, but only AVI or MPEG format...

  7. To Barnabas:
On this site there's a guide that says about AIW (radeon) MMC 7.5 (last version for W98 is 7.1), but on google groups I read about AiW 128 with w2k, MMC >= 7.5 and all working.
    To fred:
    Uncertain solution, but thanks anyway.
    To jackieshane:
    I have 16 MB , AGP version
To all:Thanks for the answers. I had in mind AVI files of course. Direct capturing to mpeg1(2) I use only as a VCR substitution (record, watch and then delete). Mpegs I can capture in higher resolutions, but I need avi for further processing. I am big fan of music videos, and I want to store them on SVCD's. The VCD resolution is good, but not good enough for me. Upgrading to w2k will be the last resort for me (I also like to play older games). Maybe Win ME will do better, I heard that for video apps, they are the fastest.
By the way - where is is the capturing software - in ATI AiW drivers or in MMC ?

    In MMC.

Open TV, then find the button to config... you will find VCR options...

  10. JN,

Forget the guide, the only way the older ATI All-In-Wonder's will capture anything larger than X x 288 in Windows 98 is if you use the OLD drivers, which are not even available on the ATI site anyplace that I have ever seen. When ATI came out with MMC7.0, and the new display drivers, they totally dropped supprt for anything larger than X x 288 for AVI captures. Unlike the Radeon cards, the chipset in the older 128's has a BT 829 chipset, which means that the generic drivers that are available for the BT 848/9 and BT 878/9 can't be used.

  11. Yep,

Barnabas has 100% right. For that reason I stopped using MMC and return to an older version (which I have on a cd JN. I can send you a copy).
By the way: I also stopped (long ago) using ATI software for capturing. The results are bad. Nothing better then using VirtualDub using ATI as source.

A Hint: buy the "Pinnacle Firewire Studio DV clip" card. Cost plus/minus $45,-. With this card you capture easily format 720*576.

    Folks,

I too have Win XP (professional) and have upgraded from MMC 6.3 to MMC 7.1. It's frustrating not to be able to capture AVIs with more than 288 lines of vertical resolution. MMC 6.3 had no such limitations (but FAT32 in Win 98 really sucks for AVI capture). Has anyone tried to use MMC 6.3 with Win XP? I liked the old VCR-1 codec, but I like to capture video with small amounts of compression. I used MMC 7.1 and VirtualDub and im still limited to a god awful 720x240! I still have the MMC 6.3, and perhaps I will try to install it on my system.

    System Specs:
    1.4GHZ Athlon XP
2- Western Digital 80GB HDD (one for the OS and one for A/V work)
    16MB AIW 128
    Creative Soundblaster Audigy (gamer)
    512MB of Crucial DDR memory
and all of the usual bits to make a PC.

My system isn't an SGI workstation, but it's no slouch either. Any suggestions will help!

  13. Thanks to all. As I said, I use MMC for only temporary capturing. For SVCD (videoclips) creastion I use VirtualDub, which enables 480x288 avi capturing. After coverting to 480x576 mpeg2 the picture is still good. That's enough for me by now, maybe in the future I buy a better TV card, but now it is sufficient . Thanks, J.N.
