The more "lines" the more detail that will come thru. For this reason, you should always use the HIGHEST resolution possible (720x480/576).

  3. Higher Vertical Resolution...

I've been experimenting lately with the following numbers for the viewable area of an XVCD MPEG-1 stream:

    4:3 Aspect Ratio - 352 x 480 NTSC or 352 x 576 PAL (ALT: 320 x 480)

    16:9 Aspect Ratio - 352 x 400 (ALT: 320 x 352)

    2.35:1 Aspect Ratio - 352 x 304 (ALT: 320 x 272)

In each case the full encoded frame is 352 x 480 pixels NTSC (or 352 x 576 pixels PAL). The viewing area is centered and letterboxed on a black background. In this way you can have an XVCD with twice the vertical resolution of a 352 x 240 (or 352 x 288) pixel encode. This is fine for viewing on PC (using Sasami2K) or Sega Dreamcast (with Dreammovie VCD player). It might not be so compliant on standalone VCD or DVD players though.
