Hi
I have just downloaded 2 avi files and I tried coverting them to mpg-1 format with TMPGEnc, but when I start the program the preview screen is black...?!?!?
I have the latest codecs installed...I think...?...from the divx site anyway.
Also when I try to watch the avi files with Windows Media Player they work just fine.
I would like to convert both avi files to mpg-1 files, so I can make 2 VCD's.
I would appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice or tips to solve my problem....
Thanks

This wouldn't happen to be a VBR multipass mpeg-1 encode you are attempting, would it? Such as an XVCD, I mean (since you didn't specifically say "VCD", I thought I'd ask).
If it is a single-pass encode, then take a look at:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problemsAs Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
did you drag the slider to the right some distance and see if you still do not have any video ?

Since they play OK try this
TMPGEnc
Select options > environmental settings
click the VFAPI plug-in tab
right click the "DirectShow" and select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4
Also...
Option > Preview Option > Display with thinningJust incase you have it switched off
