  1. Hi all. I am just starting to use my Roxio Platnium software. When I try to put files on a vcd I get a message telling me that I need an encoder to convert files to mpeg format. After a week of web surfing I came accross this forum.Any information will be greatly apriciated.

  2. You need convert it to MPEG-1. There are lots of encoders out there. The most popular one is TMPGenc which is free. But if you want to put some money into it, the best one is Cinema Craft Encoder which is not free.

You gotta love Doom9's forums that require you to be registered for a whole 5 days before you can start posting stuff like heatguy posted. I mean honestly do just a LITTLE , TINY, MINUTE of research before you go asking very vague question when the answer is right to your left.

It almost seems as if the ONLY thing that people see when they come to this site are the words.....

and they automatically jump right in, NOT knowing ANYTHING. Well that's why this Newbie forum is here, but then again it shouldn't, because most questions that can be answered here are right to the left.

  4. Thank you jim for the info.
As for the sarcasm from Mr. deadpac, noy everybody has the exprience or is able to sit in front of a computer for 12 hours a day to figure things out.Besides, if the newbie forum is so disturbing to you, then why are you reading it!

  5. In deadpac's defense, I agree with the point that he is making overall. Yes, this is a newbie forum, however, A LOT of the posts that we (as the "experienced ones" are questions that have been asked over an over and it gets a tad bit annoying and frustrating to open up these posts.

To answer your immediate kneejerk response to my post, I come to the forum to help other users out as I was helped out when I first started. If you want to check out my earlier posts to come up with some argument that I asked the same questions, my posts all started with the theme that I read the guides and did several searches on the forum and I was stuck.

The purpose of this forum is twofold:to share best practices and to help out people that are stuck AFTER they have tried to resolve the issue(s) on their own.

Your personal attack on Mr. Deadpac is the result of his (and my) theory of when 1 person cuts you off in traffic, EVERYONE's is a bad driver.

This post has solved nothing because newbies will still jump in with subject lines of "help", "how do I rip a DVD", and "how do you make a vcd". The "gatekeepers of info" will continue to make the same comments.

Now that that is out of my system (you will find longer and shorter variations of the above on my other posts), in answer to your original question. TMPGENC, which is an encoder, can convert your AVI to an mpeg, which you can then use to convert to VCD. You can find TMPGENC in the tools section to the left. You can find the guide for doing this in the newbie/author/convert sections. If you plan on playing the completed vcd in a standalone dvd player after burning it with your software (there are also guides on here for that), there is a section to the left (dvd players) that will give you a decent compatibility listing for VCD's. There are times it is underconstruction. If so, do a search for your dvd player and it will give you posts of your dvd player and you can gleen info from that to tell you if your dvd player will play them.

If you have more questions or need additional information and dont want to post again on this site until you are more comfortable, feel free to send me an email of your questions and I can help you out

  7. My personal attack as you call it was the result of his assuming that I did not do any research.I have down loaded several programs that mentioned encoding and converting file types and none of them worked. It was after thiat point of frustration that I located this forum. If I have offended anyone I will apologize, However, Mr. Deadpacs assumption of no research and his sarcatisc comments about newbies and my question in particular were offensive to me.Maybe I am not understanding the context of his commentary, and I if I am, then I will apoligize for my comments.
And as for the info you have so generously supplied, thank you. I am now experimenting with the free software. If you or anyone else might know of some literature on this subject that I can read, then maybe I can ask some more specific questions. I hope that we did not get off on the wrong foot.

  8. Probably the first thing you want to read to get you up to speed on the digital world is:

    http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/video-capture.htm

This gives a big picture into the word of encoding and digital capture. Talks high level about what it is, frame rates, bit rate, and stuff like that.

For a guide on your specific question, this guide will get you there(this also gives a great visual explaination of the different pieces of TMPGENC and a high level of what it does:

    http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/AVItoVCD.htm

    that should get you started

on the other stuff, you didnt offend anyone (or at least me), I looked at both of your posts and saw his frustration and your thinking it was a personal shot.

ps. if you do decide to get into thid, yiou will:

a)be doing this stuff 12 or mor hours a day
b)sending similar posts to newbies when you get that (what feels like) 10 billionth "how do i rip a dvd" request.

Heck no, take no notice, nobody else reads the guides either If they did then I would not be posting the same answer 10 times a day... The guides are usually outdated as soon as they are posted anyway Like many replies in the forum, I am sure you will agree that people do get fed up of seeing the same old question.

So here is a quick boost to your knowledge.

    1, download AVI
2, Scan with Vdub for junk frames
3, load into TMPGEnc and load a VCD template (PAL/NTSC)
4, click start to make the mpeg1 .mpg
4b, use split merge to split large files
5, Load Roxio and select VCD, load .mpg
    6, burn
7, make coffee sit back and watch film.

    Well there you go, but don’t expect it to be as easy as that, along the way you may get problems with the above, then you can come back here and post a messages like;

I fallowed the guides, but when I do this....

I have to agree with deadpac. People frequently don't make the minimum effort to read what is already here, yet they expect others to take the time and spoon feed to them what they are too lazy to look for themselves. What you are basically saying is that your time is more important than ours.

This is not just a problem here and in other forums, but is a problem all over usenet and seems to be part and parcel of the general dumbing down of the internet.
