i can do the easy dvds,(the ones where the movie is less than 4.3gb) i can do the splitting onto two discs no probs, but i realy want it one one disk, so i realy need to shrink the movie. every time i use rmpeg2 it crashes, we have have three machines and it does it on all of them, does anybody have any idea what is causing this problem or have a better way to do this?

I haven't actually done any of this as I don't have a DVD writer, but you may want to check out these guides
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-cce.htm for Scenarist
and http://www.doom9.org/mpg/maestro2.htm for DVD Maestro
and this thread
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=138d97210035f7ac14d017f12125b181&threadid=17400
over at Doom9. The forum thread covers other authoring software other than the two above if you work through the whole thing.

You may try this, it has worked for me. I rip main movie vob's, use DVD2AVI to create a .d2v project, use bitrate calc to find bitrate for desired file size, import into tmpg, use dvd template with 2-pass vbr where the avg. bitrate is the result from calc. Then encode. You should get an mpeg. file that you can send to spruceup or another authoring suite. Hope this helps.

corwin is right, use the CCE-IFOedit guide at doom9. CCE will run circles around rempeg and i have transcoded about 120+ movies and it's never crashed on me
