  1. 1. I converted a small part of a movie to VCD and SVCD and I really can't tell the difference between them. I would like to fit a 97 min movie on an 80 min CD. The bitrate for SVCD was around 880. The resulution of the original is 512 x 288 and 23.976. Which format would look better if trying to fit on 1 CD?

    2. What should the resolution be?

    3. So far I've been putting them on 2 cd SVCD quality, will I notice a big differnce in quality since the bitrate is lower?

    1. You can only use SVCD if you want to change the bitrate. If you change the VCD bitrate it will become a "XVCD". Check out www.kvcd.net if you want to make xvcd or xsvcd one cds.

    2. Use tmpgenc templates.

    3. Yes, but it you use for example kvcds one cds template you will get kinda good quality but they will not play on all svcd or vcd compatible players.

Extract audio to uncompressed wav as per method found elsewhere on this site.

Load the standard VCD template for NTSC(film).
    Load the unlock template.
    Alter system>stream-type to mpeg-1 video-CD(non-standard)
Alter video>rate control method to 2-pass VBR, setting max-bitrate=1300, min-bitrate=300, av-bitrate=1000, tick *enable padding*
Alter motion search precision to *high quality*
Save the template with a new name.
Use the project wizard and step through loading the DivX and wav file, choosing the new template.
At stage 4/5 click on *expert* and check advanced>source aspect ratio=1:1(VGA) and Video arrange method =Full screen(keep aspect ratio) then click *OK*
    select CDR 80 minute(VCD/SVCD)
Adjust average bitrate until you get to just below 100% disc capacity.
    Encode, and wait...

  5. Lesson 1A.

If the source is not recorded in SVHS(352x288) or higher, coding in vcd or svcd trouly doesn't matter because there is no details that can put svcd to is limits.

    Lesson 1B.

Personally I wan't code below 1150kbit/s (VCD). Have tried at 800kbit/s but the best is anyway 1150 or highier.

    Lesson 1C.

For PAL (Europe, Region 2) this is the format:
    VCD: 352x288 25fps, mpeg1
    SCVD 480x576 25fps, mpeg 2
    DVD 720x576 25fps mpeg 2
    CVD 352x288 25fps, mpeg 1/2

A VBR non-standard 1-disc VCD (~up to 100 minutes) as suggested in my post above can often look better than a standard 2-disc VCD. The only question is whether your player takes non-compliant VCD.

Don't take my word for it - try it. 8)

  7. 1.what's the difference between kvcd x2 1cd and the regular kvcd templates that are on that site?

2.yes, my player does take xsvcd and xvcd, I have an apex so it plays whatever you throw at it!

3.so the reason why you make a template and save it in mpeg1 mode is so you can work with it in the wizard as if you were working with svcd then right? since you can adjust the bitrate like svcd! Am I correct?

4.lso, when I converted a small portion just to check how the movie looked like on my dvd player, the problem that I saw with the low bitrate was that the picture was too blocky, like the circle were not smooth.

The templates on that site are optimised for creating single-CD movies, with completely different GOP structure, and often non-standard resolution. I just play around with this occasionally, so just slightly modify the standard template. Mostly I do standard VCD and SVCD.

Some things work better than others. Obviously, you can get difficult material, and this is more likely to show up with a 100 minutes disc than 90!

  9. this is the main thing that I forgot to mention is that these are divx movies that I'm trying to convert and from where Iread on the kvcd site, they really don't work that well using the templates. I have to play around the aspect ratio until it looked right on my screen, but still no good...I'll keep trying I guess... Thanks
