  1. Hi

I am using TMPGEnc to try and encode my Mr. Deeds mpg (Mr. Deeds. T S. Subbed. V C D - L E Gi O N - C D1), but when I click on the start button after going through the wizard, I get a message saying that TMPGEnc cannot encode this file.

I have used VirtualDub to look up the file info and it says that it is an mpg file....Here is some of the information I get from VirtualDub:

    352X288, 25 000fps (40000us)

If I am correct ( I probably wrong..I'm new at this) this is a PAL format...right..?
And that is why I am trying to encode it to NTSC, NTSC is what works where I live.

Can anyone give me a hand with this problem...?

    Thanks

    Mr. Deeds 1 - 167,000 KB
    2 - 74,080 KB Both AVI

Well that's what I got, not a bad copy

Do the movies play OK ?

Most problems with TMPGEnc and Vdub are missing codec's, you said you loaded it into Vdub, so I guess you have the correct codec, you don't say what the codec is for video, or audio, or if you can view the movie.

We need to know more about the source, to make sure its not a fake, before we ramble on for pages

As it says CD1, it makes you think its a mpeg1 .mpg file ready for burn to VCD. So wont need any encoding, but TMPGEnc wont complain about those, unless its a SVCD and you dont have a Mpeg 2 codec installed ?

    Does it play ?

  3. Hi KingJohn,

    THank you for your reply....

The movie plays great in "Windows Media Player" but I have yet to burn it to a CD.

At least I know it's not a fake.

The fact that TMPGEnc won't accept it worries me, I dont want to make a "coaster".
My DVD player does not play SVCD so....I hope it's not an mpg-2.
If it is mpg-2, can I encode it back to an mpg-1...?...what do I use to encode it to mpg-1...?
Where would I see if it's an mpg-2...?

You already have a VCD-ready mpeg-1, so it doesn't need encoding. You need to burn it to VCD using Nero by choosing the VCD option, remebering to finalise the disc.

And King John, I know you mentioned this already. I thought I had the same copy, but when it loads into Nero mine appears to be NTSC 352x240.

Well this is a bit confusing, as you said it loads into Vdub, but not into TMPGEnc, so I think its a SVCD with the TMPGEnc problem, but I know its not when you load it into Vdub

So, what is the file extension AVI or .mpg ?
When you load into Vdub, select file > File information
What does it tell you about the movie ?

If it is a SVCD you can use TMPGEnc to convert it back to VCD, but TMPGEnc wont work with all mpeg 2 codec's, so you may need something like PowerDVD 4 installed that provides the SVCD codec.

On the other hand if its an AVI, then it could be a matter of a missing codec, so I would recommend you install the Nimo codec pack, it does have divx5 but not the latest one, so if its DivX 502 you will also need that codec from www.divx.com or download from Kazaa.

When you load into TMPGEnc does the preview work ?
