  1. Hi! New here but have read the forum several times.

I recently made a backup of a DVD-5 I have through the help of one of the guides found here.

The picture quality and sound quality are terrific, and all menus/extras, etc. are functioning properly.

When played on my set-top player (Philips DVD953. I also have a Philips DVD701 and a Panasonic Portable Player LV-55 I think. The discs play fine on those too but have the problem that I am about to mention.), the discs play fine for a few minutes, sometimes several. Then, they will skip a little, display a little blockiness, or sometimes freeze (can use FF or REW to play again). The video is fine, since when I run over the parts that skip again, they play flawlessly.

I used some cheaper DVD-R's from SmartDisk.

Also, sometimes the player will glitch a bit with regular DVDs (it is used frequently).

Could some higher-quality media or a DVD lens cleaner do the trick?

My DVD-R/RW drive is a Pioneer DVR-104, if that helps.

    Thanks in advance!

    -J.P.

You have answered your own question:

Cheap disks don't always record properly (there are tons and tons of messages/complaints across ALL boards like this one).

Bite the bullet and go buy some quality name brand DVD-Rs (Verbatim is relatively cheap), and repeat your original test. With good media, your DVD-R should work just like the original.
