I capture the movie froma VCR using ATI MMC 7.6. It look greate and everything is in sync. I then use TMPGEnc to process the movie. I also use the vcdhelp biterate calc.
No matter what size movie I process I must use the same bitrates which are the following audio 160 and video 639 I use this to cut to a 80 min CD. When I try to use the bitrates from the vcdhelp bitrate tool I get a file that is over 1 gig. My CD writer does not support over burning. I've found instructions on how to fit a movie on 1 CD and followed it and I still get this problem. I am also looking for a tool which I can use to edit my home movies.

I am having even more trouble. Now no matter what biterate I use I get the same file size. I don't understand why this is happening. Is there a setting which I need to change other than the setting in the wizard for TMPGEnc.

Yes. You need to alter System>Stream type to MPEG-1 Video-CD (non standard)

I set the video to non standard, it still does the samething.
Do you think the old settings are somehow over riding these. Do you think I should uninstall the program and start from scratch. I could load the latest version of TMPGEnc. When I made the change I did it in the wizard, do I need to make the change somewhere else.

If you are using a standard VCD template I don't know how you are altering the setting I suggested, because it is grayed out! What you need to do is load the standard template and then the unlock template - saving it with a new name. Then step through the wizard using your new template.

At stage 4/5 of the wizard you should select the *expert button* and step through all the tabs to make sure nothing has been changed that shouldn't have - apart from the average bitrate, which you are going change through the wizard. You should also check that the resolution for VCD has not changed (Video>size setting). This should be 352x240(288) depending which template you are using.

Nobody is saying how big this movie is ?
    90min on a 80min ?
    120 on a 80 min ?

Or do you want to fit any size onto 1 CD ? Ugh !

    The movie is 145 min and I finally was able to burn it to a 80min CD. I used the following settings;
    MPEG1 352X240
    29.97 fps
    CBR 671 kbps
    Layer 2 44100Hz
    128 kbps
And I set system to MPEG-1 Video CD (non-standard)
The file size which I burned to CD was 608,314
The audio can out great. I need to work on the video a little, I can see some pixcels around the actors. I burned the CD using Easy CD Creator 5 using the video creation feature. When I was able to view about 10 min. of the movie and then it ended, but I have no problem viewing the complete movie on my PC using the ATI MultiMedia Center video CD player. I tried cutting to a CD with silver instead of blue, but that did not work. Is it my burning software?
Thanks for the help to get me this far.

If you are determined to fit a movie that size to a 1-disk VCD you would be better off using CQ or 2-pass VBR. However, that size of movie would take 2 discs even for DivX which has much better compression capabilities than mpeg-1 or mpeg-2. Unless you are happy with poor quality, you should be looking to use at least 2 discs, no matter how you encode it! 8)

Can you tell me or point me to instructions on how to use two disks. I would like to use TMPGEnc to do the processing.

Absolutely you are trying to put too much on one disc. If you relax the standards of VCD you can usually get a 100 minute movie, possibly even 2 hours, onto one disc, but you do need to use a variable bitrate, so the limited bits you are using go where they are most needed.

You should be able to modify the *one-disc* guide on this site, but you will still need to go to 2 discs. http://forum.vcdhelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=84759

    You should also visit http://www.kvcd.net/

Hope that was a CDR-W As now you wasted a disk, when you could have put it on 2 disks with better quality.

I would load a VCD template, if it takes 3 disks I wont change the quality just to put it on 2. Disks are ssssoooo cheap, why bother... After all you got the movie free ?

    Thanks for all the information.
I read through the information which helped to clear up some other questions I had. One last question on this process, after going through the whole process how exactly would I cut the mpeg to two CD's. Do I need to process half the movie and burn it then process the other half and burn it?
I went to the site you recommended and got the .mcf templates. I processed 16min of the movie, the quality is great. I used the template which uses CQ. The only problem is that it triples the time it takes. I plan on upgrading the memory real soon to take care of this increase in process time.

The best way is to use 2-pass VBR, then you can use TMPG's project wizard to make the *VCD* 195% of disc size. Then you will be able to cut it with TMPG's mpeg tools to fit to 2 CDs. You could make it nearer 200%, but then you would need to be an expert cutter like KingJohn to do the cutting.

In order to use VBR (or CQ) with the project wizard, you will first have to select the standard template, then the unlock template, and finally save it with a new name.

I only wasted 4 CD's this week. banjazzer with the settings I have so far if I want to transfer these video's from the 2 vcd's to one DVD, will I run into a problem?

I don't have the capability to write to DVD, so it is outside my experience. However, I think the way to go would probably be to use TMPG's DVD template, encoding directly from your source files.
