Hey,
If you want cheap, go apex... Wal-Mart has one for 98 bucks, and it will play just about anything...

Look at the list on this site.
APEX players read lots of forms and most can be upgradded.
It seems off brand players are more compatible with home made disks. -
I can reccomend Philips DVD711 but for another reason, the playback picture quality is awesome. The colors come out without biasing to any hue, blacks, whites and mid-tones are totally pure.
I use Titanic DVD as a reference material, there's a certain dark scene with a colorfade. On Philips there's slight steps from one hue to another just barely visible. On some other players that I tested the steps are far more severe.
Philips plays many formats ok (look elsewhere on this forum how I got ff and rew to work for my svcd's should you be interested).
Just My Humble Opinion. -
I had an Apex 703, returned it. A Philips, returned it.
My Pioneer 434 plays everything I throw at it with no problem. Mostly SVCD's burnt with Nero. FF and RW works too.
Excellent player. Good Luck
