  1. Hello, I hope someone here can help me...

I have looked at several of the newbie faqs, and tried to follow them to cature video to make a dvd. I have virtual dub the newest release, and use a ATI Tv wonder. All other hardware is listed in my profile. When ever I select the resolution, and format I always receive a format is un supported error. Then when I try to capture on the default settings I get a out of memory error.. Any ideas thanks...

  2. Under Capture Settings make sure you are choosing
    your resolution under the......

    "Set Custom Format"

    setup and not the default

    "Format" setup

    Choose your resolution with
    Video > Set Custom Format

    NOT
    Video > Format

  5. going from what you specifically put in your post (using ati tv wonder to make a DVD). With your current setup (using tv wonder's software) that will never happen!! Your tv wonder card can only capture at xxx X 240/288. This has to do with the horizontal and verticle lines of the capture you are trying to do. DVD resolution (and bit rate) is way above that number.

virtual dub, under your current config will not go above 352 x 240 (are you using xp as your O/S??)

To go above that (are you REALLY wanting to make a DVD -do you have a dvd writer, or are you confusing that with VCD/SVCD/CVD/XVCD???) you will need to download some other software, like IUVCR,WINVCR and programs like that.

If you are a newbie at this, for now you should stick to doing 352x240 captures with either virtual dub (aka VDUB) and converting over to mpeg and then to VCD until you get more familiar with how it all works. Have you mastered the ATI bundles software and that is why you are moving over to VDUB??? Starting out ATI's software is adequate to get you some practice.

Another EASY to use real time capture software is powervcrII from cyberlink. You can buy it on ebay for about $15.00 (after shipping charges). It will get you better results after you apply some registry tweeks and do an audio upgrade.

As far as reading the guides. There is one in the newbie section that spells out how to set up and capture using ati's software & VDUB. The thing you will have to keep in mind is that your res rate will top out at 352x240.

  6. Thanks for the info... I really want to make DVD's I have a burner, and I want to make some high quality DVD's of some home movies. I tried the ATI software but in capturing mpeg 2 it appears to work fine, but I can never access the files . It tells me they are corrupt or in a invalid format. I appreciate any incite into the problem. Is there a way with the ATI card to get dvd resolution?

    Thanks

  7. Ah.....sorry for questioning you on the DVd thing. Sooo many times a newbie gets on this site and says DVD, but they actually mean vcd/svcd. I would spend hours trying to fix their issue and then learn it is vcd.

Anyway on your issue. The out of the box ATI software wont work at all. When you set up your profiles it always gave you ??? X 240. It cant do above 240 horizontal (or maybe its vertical) lines. Another fun thing with the ATI software is that it captures (mpeg) into this mp2 crap, which is uneditable (could be wrong, but everything I have thrown at it it wont work in) in everything else.

I personally dont have a dvd burner, so my knowledge on that part is not too great, however, I can point you to some softwares that will get you where you want to go.

when you say high quality, what is out there for the masses will get you close, but no cigar ( I always like to do a reality adjustment since most people that you can take a vhs source and convert it to dvd/vcd and have it look the same. To get close, I use IUVCR with the mjpeg codec and capture in AVI format and then have TMPGENC reencode to mpeg and then burn to the media using nero. If you want to avoid the reencoding (time, experience, etc.) you can get powervcrII from cyberlink (available on ebay for $15.00) and capture in DVD format/quality (it is all set up for you). A word of caution, when I capture for SVCD or CVD format, the motion quality isnt perfect. Good, not perfect. It may be a whole new ballgame going DVD. Actually, I may use it to cap at DVD quality and then reencode down to CVd and see how that works.

Anyway, The tools section to the left will get you some good freeware tools. Without getting all techie, don't use vdub. Not that it isnt a great capture device, it just cant get you to the DVD resolution that you need. I use IUVCR and the mpeg codec. Send me your email address and I will show you how to set it up.

First off, the mpeg that the ATI produces can be renamed to "mpg" and it should work fine. The bigger problem here is that people are trying to cap in Mpeg-2 to try to get around the conversion time issue. Unfortunately, most Mpeg-2 editors do a really poor job so my recommend is to only cap in Mpeg-2 when there are no edits to be made later. Otherwise, cap in AVI with the ATI card and edit that and then convert to your final format. It will save a lot of headaches rather than doing it the other way...

  9. Mac: I am going to get that software. If you can or if anyone else knows post the configs to my email or the board. I really appreciate it.
