    I use ScenalyzerLive as it allows you to choose between type 1 and type 2 DV AVI files. This is necessary if you intend to edit with Adobe Premiere as it requires type 2 files of 2GB or less.
    Most other programs I have tried use type 1 files.
    It also has some usefull scene detection options to automatically split your files up.
