For DVD you need a DVD rom. For VHS you need a capture card or
a digital firewire capable video camera and a firewire card.
As you have a DVD rom, you can rip and copy the movie to
your hard drive and play it but each movie will take
3 to 6 Gigabytes of hard drive space. You could swap
between movies (rip & play one at a time then delete)
or transcode the movie to fit in a smaller size.
Really neither of the above options is useful.
You are going to have to buy either a cd burner
or a dvd burner, and for your VHS movies you
are going to need a capture card.
To copy a DVD try Smartripper or DVDecrypt (see tools section at left hand side) to put a DVD on your laptop and to play it back you need a mpeg-2 software decoder OR a DVD software player like PowerDVD.
