dvd+r basics help wanted

hi all and thank you in advance for your help. i've tried to follow the newbie guide to dvd to dvdr comversion, but keep getting bad results. can anyone recommend a basic, complete and simple guide for this. i have all the tools including nero, and have done sefy's dvd to vcd without any problems on my old machine but have no experience with my dell internal phillips dvd+rw. thank you.
