I am thinking of buying the Mediostrean NeoDVD that converts DV through firewire to DVD format directly. This program does not give mpeg2 files as an output, instead it writes DVD images. The other program from the same company (CamPeg RT) does mpeg2 output only and cost $250 vs $99 for NeoDVD.
The reason for wanting the mpeg2 back is for possible re-authoring the DVD at a later time.

My question is: is it possible to extract the mpeg2 files from DVD images losslessly ?. I have read the tutorial in vcdhelp.com that involves using DVD2AVI then Tempgenc.
I assume that this is a lossy process even if the output template is set to DVD mpeg2 type.
Can mpeg2 be recovered by merely stripping header infos from the DVD image ?.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. DVD format (VOB files) are just specially multiplexed collections of mpeg video and audio along with timing and navigation information.

The mpeg video can be demultiplexed (demuxed) from the VOB file stream without any loss of quality. It will lose quality if only you re-encode the video (to a different format/resolution/bitrate/etc).

You sure the marketing lingo isn't misleading ? A lot of packages nowadays can encode mpeg2 video in realtime, but the formatting for DVD is usually an additional processing step.

It is strange that Mediostream sells NEODVD that does more for less than CAmpeg Rt, which is th engine that powers the NeoDVD.
I have read the manual of NeoDVD online - mpeg2 output is not an option. You have to buy Campeg RT if you want mpeg2 files.

    Check it out at
    http://www.mediostream.com

Is there a single program that extract mpegs besides the DVD2AVI &Tempgenc ?.

    Thanks.
