  1. I'm trying to defragment my drive on Win98, I run the defragment and it just goes to 1% then back to 0%, and so on and on.
I ran it overnight for 8 hours and it got up to 2%.

At that rate it would take about 2 weeks to get this thing finished!

    Any thoughts?

Close all the other running processes that you can before running it, and leave the system until defrag has finished. It probably keeps restarting because something keeps writing to the disk. You might want to try something like Norton Utilities' "Speed disk", as the guy said before me; Win98's defrag sucks.

Yes, I have the same problem as you with the defragmentor taking a long time if ever to get it finished. In my computer it used to stay on 10% all day and all night not doing anything. The problem is now fixed with these simple rules below.

Turn off the screensavers, stop the anti-virus program running, turn off the firewall. If you are connected to the LAN, disconnect this one as well and this includes the Internet. All these programs do interfere with the defragmenting and this is why it is stalling. Turn off everything.

I usually start the defragmenting manually overnight, weekly. The time is when I go to bed for the night. This is a convenient time when the defragment is not in the way during the day.

A way to go and usually the defragmenting would be over in an hour with these simple rules.

also run scan disc first and make sure you have the box"fix errors automatically" checked, otherwise defrag will never work.

  7. Mine used to allways get to 10% then restart due to something writing to the harddrive.

This 'something writing to the harddrive' was cured by simply unplugging the lead to my ethernet card.

Leave your cable modem plugged in and you are constantly passing info to and from the internet therefore writing to the harddrive.
