  1. I got some svcds that I cant watch on my standalone dvd-player, since it
doesnt know svcd. However, it does play vcd and cdr (it worked ok). I
thus tried to convert my svcd to vcd using the guide on vcdhelp. I tried
    the following:

    1. I used the svcd/vcd-trick (simple multiplex from tmpgenc) to get a
'mpeg1'. I could watch this mpg using Windows media player. Then I burned
it using WinOncd 3.5 to a VideoCD 2.0. When I put it into my dvd-Player
the sound is ok, but I get only still pictures every 3 or 4 seconds.

    2. I used the other way described on vcdhelp: I converted the mpeg2 file
from the svcd using dvd2avi and then decoded it using tmpgenc to get an
mpeg1. I could view this file on my computer. Then again I burned it to
vcd using Winoncd 3.5. When I put it into my dvd-Player the sound is ok,
but I get only some seconds of the movie, then a still picture and then
again some seconds of the movie and so on.

    3. Since I thought that winoncd might be the reason for my problems, i
used the mpeg1 I generated with tmpgenc and created an vcd-image using
vcdimager. I then renamed the bin-file to *.raw and wrote this image to a
cd using winoncd. The directory structure looked fine on my pc. However,
the dvd player could only recognize a vcd and display the length of the
movie but did not display anything.

Can anybody tell me, what I am doing wrong? Could it be, that Winoncd
    cannot write a good vcd?

To test this, could someone point me to a place, where I can find a
correct mpeg1-file. I would then try to burn my ownd vcd from it and
could check, whether winoncd works or not.

    regards,

  2. I just tried VCDeasy with the same result: I only get some seconds of the movie and then stills. The sound is ok. Since the same problem occurs with Winoncd and vcdeasy, the problem must be withgin the mpg-file. Any suggestions?

Did you save it as an avi from dvd2avi ? I am unclear on this from your question.

The method I'd suggest is open the mpg2 file in dvd2avi, but you should frameserve it into TMPG, then load your VCD template and encode.

Make sure dvd2avi is selecting Mpg Audio for you audio as well. You should be good to go.

I opened the file in dvd2avi, checked the framerate, selected the first audio track and then saved the project, getting a tiny d2v and a bigger mpa-file.

In tmpgenc I selected the d2v (video) and the mpa (audio) and loaded the vcd (PAL, as I had 25 fps) template. Then I encoded the file. I also tried the same with lower or higher quality or with a smaller bitrate. However, this makes no difference (only the quality of the video changes): The movie still stops every 3 sconds or so.

I think, I did all this right as proposed by the guide.

My guess is that the problem lies in the conversion, not in the burning step (I tried two different programs, winoncd and vcdeasy for burning with the same result). Thus, I would like to use another program for the step converting the mpeg2 to mpeg1. Is there another way? I downloaded flaskmpeg and xmpeg and installed them. However, when started they both complain about the absence of some plugin and exit.

Could anyone hind me to an alternative program to do the mpeg2/mpeg1 conversion?

  5. Just solved the problem: The dvd-player didnt like the brand of cdr I used. I then tried a different brand and everything worked ok.
