  1. Hi everyone. I've been saving my old video collection by capturing to AVI_IO & using my PCTVpro card,(using the old V4.02 VFW drivers), & converting without hassles using VirtualDub framserving to TMPGenc. And finally use Nero 5.5.8.2 to burn them VCD's.

Nero does not have a problem checking the files, they're supposed to be fully VCD compliant,& I'm using TMPGenc project wizard to make sure I select VCD selections. I've even use a util called Mpeg properties 100 to occasionally check the files.

After using Nero,I've been checking the VCD's using WinDVD,& playing the VCD's via my CD-Rom drive in my PC. I have not set any region in WinDVD.
However,I just had a friend try to play the VCD's on his DVD player, & he said he couldn't play them. His DVD player has played Asian VCD's before no problems,(I'm an aussie BTW).

Now I've been told that VCD's are not supposed to need region coding like DVD's do, yet I cannot play my home created/burnt VCD's on a DVD player. They're fully compliant, why are they working??

Or more to the point, why (albeit without region settings),WinDVD, Nero etc. all acknowledge the files as VCD's but a standalone Region 4 DVD player cannot play them???

When a player says it plays VCDs, it only means it can play the commercial, storer-bought ones. If you want to know if your player plays your computer-generated VCDs, you have to look for the CD-R capability.

Otherwise, on a long shot, you can check the compatibility database on the left ("DVD Players"), to see if your fellow owners can tell you if your player supports CD-Rs.

Since you did not list you or your friend's players, I cannot do you the courtesy of checking them for you. Anyway, good luck!

  3. Thank you for the prompt reply Tommyknocker. So,if I understand you correctly, you're saying that my VCD's,(given what I've already said about them),should be okay to play on a standalone DVD player(region 4 in the case of us Aussies.),so long as that DVD player can play CD-R CD's too. But I take it it must list CDR/RW playback specifically,(I mean a lot CD player's can play CD-R's of copied Audio CD's,for instance, but obviously only special one play MP3's if you take my meaning)

What's the difference between commercial VCD's to the home-created TMPGENC/Nero done projects-I've been told previously VCD's aren't region coded?!

I don't know my mate's DVD brand/player. I hope thats the case, cos I'd hate to think my efforts have been in vain.
Looks like I'll have to be very careful when I choose a DVD player.

Commercial (retail) VCDs are pressed, just like retail DVDs and retail music CDs. They are not burned onto recordable media. VCDs are not region coded.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  5. My only other concern is I tried to play my computer generated home VCD's, in a PC DVD-ROM drive using WinDVD, they played fine when the DVD-Rom drive didn't have a region selected, but once the PC DVD_ROM drive was configured in WinDVD to play region 4 DVD's, WinDVD refused to play the computer made VCD's in that region 4 DVD drive.
So will a PC DVD-rom drive act differently to a normal, standalone DVD player in that sense??

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I remain concerned....
