ok I did 3 movies this week all around the 2:20:00 time mark. I did Blackhawk Down, Matrix and Armageddon.
basic results in tmpgenc plus 2.56, 2pass vbr, highest quality motion search, 720*480 Mpeg2 video only - all the same except for the aspect ratio
Blackhawk Down 16:9
Matrix 16:9
them two took about 16 hours each to transcode from dvd2avi
Armageddon 4:3
when I did this one, it took 43.5 hours with about 1 hour of no cpu time, so 42.5 hours. I thought it was baked so I stopped it after a few min and double checked my settings and rebooted and still took forever.
something I don't know about 4:3 or bug or anyone know?
thanks.

sorry for apparently posting in the wrong group. this is purely a dvd encoding, not ripping problem/question. I figured both groups would be suitable, but the other group may have more knowledge/experience.
