how do i know what files i have

i have downloaded shrek and pearl harbour from the kazza site and they wont play in media player,get error 8004022f.
been to the divx site and got the playa and they still wont work.total newbie to this,eventually i will want to burn them to cd.looked in other post but i dont know what im looking for. any help appreciated.

Normally when downloading from the Kazaa site you'll find an info box when passing over the file you want to download - this often contains additional information like which codec was used. I presume your file was an avi file?Due to the amount of codecs available its like a lucky dip if you actually have the right ones, or if you need to download some more. Best thing to do download the most popular ones i.e. MPEG4 ver3, SMR, OpenDivx etc.
