  1. i would like to transfer video from my analogue camcorder to my pc, to edit it and add soundtracks etc etc, whats the best capture card i can buy, baring in mind i only hve enough money for a tv tuner style pci card.

    Then buy exactly what you said. Buy one based on BT829 bt848 bt878 or bt879 chipset. They seem to be the most compatible.

    Mine is an Avermedia tv98 bt878. This company has a good rep.
    I recommend it because its been trouble free and has been tested with every possible capture app around and works everytime.

    But knowing your system capabilities is important also.

    These depend on your system for processing power. They have no hardware compressing capability.

    Anything from a p2 or equivalent will do ok. Less and you will have to cut down the rez and frame size and may be forced to use only the fastest DIVX settings for compression.

    If you want full size mpeg capture you will need at least a PIII 800 or above. (equivalent amd or other are fine also)

    Some applications are optimized for P3, AMD and P4.

    Relatively inexpensive - cost should be less than $100 canadian
