From what I read online, the developers of VCD now require a licensing fee for any DVD-player manufacturer that wants to include VCD support in their product. Something along the lines of a $4-per-unit fee. Apex opted to keep the price of their units down and drop VCD support, instead of raising their prices. I can understand that on some lower-end models, but they should still offer models with VCD/SVCD support even if they cost a little more, for those who want it. Again I read this online, so I have NO idea how accurate this is.

Most people buy Apex DVD players because of their ability to play everything. Because Apex doesnt want to caugh up $4 per unit to Philips they're going to lose ALOT of money, because people will no longer buy a Apex dvd player if its not going to play VCD.
