Does the make of the CDR determine the quality of the VCD? I have used many brands and the best so far has been the "Memorex CD-R Black All Use". Though my player still pixelates, so I think my Sampo DVE-611 is mostly to blame for that. So my questions is what CD-R's work best for you? Which brands have been a nightmare?
I have had many trouble with the "TDK Data CD-R's".

Compatibility varies widely, depending on player brand and even model number. See the "dvd players" link on the left - people have already typed an entered hundreds and hundreds of bits of feedback regarding media and format compatibility for hundreds and hundreds of players.

To my dissappointment, I found tests on cdr's, apparently most of the Taiwan made cdr's don't pass the time test, they didn't say how long they would last, but they won't last the 25+ years. These are the factories that passed the time test: TDK (the factory, there are TDK's from the "other" factory). Ricoh, Taiyo Yuden, and Kodak. Here's the link for more info. http://cdmediaworld.com, fuji at least made the medium quality list, they can be had pretty cheap, however it is on the poor quality list as well, hard to tell where they are from, anyone know?

Don't be confused by the selling brand. The CD-R's are made at only 6-7 plants in the world. ( BTW, I think TDK closed the plant in USA ). The selling brand merely reflects acquired inventory from multiple plants by the selling corporations. For example, you can find Memorex CD-R 80 min cake box 50 pk that have a black screw on lid cap and say " Made in Japan " . These are made by Taiyo Yuden. Ecxellent quality. The bayonnet type cake box 50 pk of Memorex says " made in Taiwan on it". Ditto for TDK, same packaging distinctions and manufacturers. Fuji, I belive , are all Japan made. So don't go by the selling branding, find what manufacturer / dye type best supports your burning / playing hardware at the best $ , and buy when on sale / rebate. Check out CDRInfo, a little DL program that reads the disc medium and indicates maker and dye type.

ah nuts! I went looking for the CDR Info program and it states "only works with Plextor drives!"

I must have misnamed it since the one I use works with all drives. try a google search, and you'll find at least one other available program.

Princo Corporation, Gigastorage Corp., Lead Data Inc., Fornet International Pte Ltd., Ritec Co., CMC Magnetics Corp. , If they are, then it should be safe to purchase those manufactured in Japan? And there is another 5 manufactureres that were'nt tested. Fuji's were also listed as being made by Ritek Co.? Thing is, if they will last 20 yrs. that would probably be ok.

The info supplied by CDRInfo is not reliable.
Generally, the best quality media come from those companies that actually make their own media and don't OEM it to third parties (e.g., Kodak, Verbatim, some others).
