I have heard (or read) from different people that what u use to burn a dvd...... nero or smartripper can cause how good or if the dvd can play in certain units.... i want to no is there any truth to this or is it a rumor or a figment of peoples imagaintion

Firstly, SmartRipper is (as it's name suggests) a RIPPING program. It does not burn to a DVD-R, it gets the movie OFF the original so you can play around with it.
I personally have tried Nero as well as PrimoDVD and it's descendant RecordNowMAX. I have found the latter two to often decide not to burn quite a few files of my compilation which wastes everything...
I now use Nero 5.5.90 and have never had a problem burning or playing over 30 DVD-Rs; I have also had no problems playing Nero burned DVD-Rs on several brand set tops other than my own.
I would stick with Nero all the way, but (like most things) that's just my opinion. Hope this helps a bit. -
smart ripper does burn dvd-r...... if u rip da info off it gives u a option where to save it.... well u just pic your dvd recorder and it wll burn it on there (thats they slick way of not getting in trouble) also what other software besides them 2 that burn dvds?????? besides that garbage ass hp software!!!!!!!!!
