  1. But I'd appreciate any help...

I want to burn a DVD from an encoded file but I only have a CD-RW drive
and not a DVD-RW drive. Can I still burn DVDs onto DVD-R disks using the CD-RW drive, or would I need a DVD-RW drive for that?

It's not "may be". It should be "is".

(Silly me... spent all that money on a DVD burner when all I had to do was just slap a DVD blank into my CD burner. And silly me still, I spent all that money on a CD burner when all I had to do was slap a CD blank on my old 33RPM record player.)

  3. Thanks

What about a file that's in SVCD format...I'm guessing it's okay to burn a
    657 MB SVCD file onto a 700MB CD-R disc?

Humm, let's seeeee... Will a 700MB CD-R hold a 657MB file??? Can I stick this 5 pounds of stuff in this 10 pound capacity box? Will this 2 quarts of water fit in that 1 gallon pail? Can I cook this one egg in a 15 inch frying pan?

All these are tough questions... kinda wish now that I hadn't flunked my math classes!

  5. The file sizes are just there. I wanted to know about being able to use the CD-RW drive for burning a SVCD. I'm not that stupid ok.

If you have the proper template so that the SVCD is in the correct format, then yes, you can use your CD-RW to burn a SVCD (but remember, the FORMAT is everything)

  7. You can fit up to 800 mb on a 700 mb disc. Only for SVCD and 80 minutes of movie on an 80min. CD for VCD. And SLK001 don't be an A$$.

That question is not dumb! Quite the opposite. It shows that you are trying to come up with new ideas. I must tell you that its been done but not on DVD-R only on CDR or CDRW. DVD is a totally different technology even though they look similar at first glance.

You can create a DVD equivalent mpeg2 with a real DVD structure but your standalone player would probably not accept the AC3 sound (mine would't). So you would have to go with 48 or 44 mhz. I have Prassi, Gearpro DVD, WiseAuthor (not wise A$$) and Spruceup among others in an old folder on my HD. I gave this up a while ago so I don't remember which one I used.

I did some tests about a year or 2 ago using some of these DVD Authoring software that accept CDR and CDRW. I burned and ran on my Apex. Great quality but did not handle like a DVD more like an SVCD because my remote buttons would not let me tab to menu items but it accepted chapters by numbers from my remote.
They were real DVD format with audio and video directory structures.

The down side: 12 to 15 minutes of excellent video. You would need 8 to 12 disks to hold a full movie.

    Thanks for asking.
