First, I would like to appollogize for an earlier criticism of VCDEasy, as I had troubles making VCD's initially with my system. I use a Pinnacle Studio MP-10 cature device to directly compress to mpeg-1 for burning VCD's both from my camcorder tapes (reg 8mm) and from vhs tapes, as well as DVD's.
Initially, my VCD's would not play on my Apex 1100W that has been upgraded to region free/macrovision free. The problem was that the files made by Studio MP-10 were not VCD compliant. After upgrading my Studio MP-10 software, I am now successfully making VCD's using VCDEasy. Downloading a trial version of Nero 5.5.9 was helpful in that it detected the file problem, while VCDEasy did not.
By unchecking the "analyze mpeg files" option, the program is reasonably fast as well, so instead of spending bucks for Nero, I will probably just use VCDEasy.
Unfortunately, the approximately 200 CD's that I've burned with mpeg-1 files directly, that do play on my VCD without playback controls, will never be easily converted to VCD. It would be faster to redigitize them from the start. Nero takes nearly 3 hours to convert 1 hour of mpeg-1 non-compliant to VCD compliant.
My question is, are there other utilities that can do this faster then Nero?
The error message from Nero says that the reason the files have to be converted is because of... " -stream encoding which is invalid for Video CD's."
It seems a crying shame to me that these files are so close to compatable, but still will not work.
Regards,
Gealto

Have you considered re-converting them while you sleep? That way you get your good files and a good night's sleep.

Hey I don't know what type of system you got but if Nero takes 3 hours just for one hour movie something is up with your system! For me the longest Nero has encoded anything it takes long but only like 1 hour to 1 hour and a half at most. Try Tmpg Enc. Plus thats what i use but I think it should be the same encoding time. So try it if you must.

You may be able to save all of the work you have done in the past.
Just open TMPGEnc and go to File\MPEG Tools. Leave the Simple Multiplex tab selected and open your existing MPEG1 files as the video and audio source. Set the option Type to MPEG-1 Video-CD. Save the resulting file on to your hard drive.
After this process the header will be rewritten and Nero should not try to reencode it.
