  1. Trying to create SVCD's directly by capturing in PowerVCRII with screen size 480x566 (PAL), rate 2520kbps etc. as per a post in this forum. Captures okay but when I burn the file to a CD using Nero, Nero complains that the video is not compliant (invalid stream format) and when I ignore and burn anyway, the CD is not playable on my Skyworth 1080P DVD player which plays SVCD's okay usually

Also the output MPEG file cannot be read by TMPGENc. In fact no output MPEG file I have created with PowerVCRII (XP version with latest patches) can be read by TMPGENc - I need to frameserve with DVD2AVI first

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Pal resolution is 480x576, (unless your post was a typo): don't know about the non-playable .MPG files- try loading it into bitrate viewer:
    http://www.tecoltd.com/bitratev.htm
to see what the file specs are. I haven't had any problems playing PowerVCR files.

  3. I'm having similar problems with PowerVCR. Nero tells me the SVCD file is not compliant (480x480, MPEG2, 224kpbs audio, 2300kbps video). Playing it on PC is fine but in set top DVD player audio stutters and picture is somewhat jerky. ATI MMC7 works great, no complaints from Nero and no playback issues.

Here's a possibility: is PowerVCR capturing audio at 48 kHz? If so, that may be causing my audio problem in the set top player. PowerVCR doesn't give me the option to select 44 or 48 kHz. Is there a registry hack to force this?

    Typo 480x576

I did try BV but the shareware version doesn't offer much information

Exact problem I am experiencing except it hardly plays at all. I think PowerVCR is capturing at 48 khz - need to find a way to check. Still should that cause the stuttery picture

  6. I have an Apex-500w and my SVCD from PowerVCR and PowerDirector skip because of the audio as well, and since it is mpeg- we can't change tha audio with virtualdub, I hope the is a registery hack for this or someone knows how to fix it.

I even tried to modify the GOP format noticing that TMPGENc uses 2 B blocks and 5 P blocks for their SVCD template while PowerVCR uses 2B and 4 P. That didn't make any difference either. My next test is to take the output file from PowerVCR, run it through VCDEasy instead of Nero and burn with Fireburner. Will report on the results

To answer my own post. Using VCDEasy and then Fireburner didn't work either. THe disk is created okay - just won't play. Must be something strange about that PowerVCR MPEG format that hiccups in certain players that perhaps are too SVCD compliant

Guess I am now resigned to capturing in hi-res and then creating my SVCD later using TMPGEN

I have captured NTSC format svcd 29.97 at 2500 bitrate and audio 224
and a few variations of the preceeding.

The caps played well on my Apex 600ad but I wasn't crazy about the results with some artifacts in some scenes.

I tried with and without smoothing and noise reduction. I don't expect comments on these statements.

I don't believe I saw anyone mention framerate. Did you choose 25 fps for pal and 29.97 for ntsc?

PS I like Intervideo WINCODER and Windvr better. They look clean on my Apex.

Yes I am using the right framerate. Based on a hint in the IOMAGIC forum I ran the MPEG file through TMPGENc using the MUX option. It didn't look like it was doing anything (no preview on the screen and the CPU load was low) but the output file was increasing in size. A 450MB file got processed in 5 minutes. I was then able to drag that file into Nero and create a compliant SVCD. It plays okay but the results are not great - picture is blocky with many MPEG compression artefacts and there is no way to apply any processing to the image. For example I like to use Center/Custome Aspect Ratio to squeeze the image down a bit to compensate for my TV's overscan - this is ignored in this option

  11. I blew $40 USD for this PowerVCRII program (Comp-usa, it came with a cheapo-cap card) hoping it would give good SVCD / VCD compliant results. Very disappointed, as I can't even figure out how to make it record VBR files.

I still feel that my MMC 7.6 (downgraded from 7.7) gives some fantastic results, when capping VCD res, at 1250 VBR. I can fit from 80-120 minutes per disk, with little or no artifacts in real time. PowerVCR recordings look too milky to me. I hate some of the things about MMC, but it continues to impress me as one of the best real-time software encoders out there...

Anyone know where the VBR options are hiding in PVCRII? I downloaded the latest patch with no luck.

    Thanks!

Not sure PVCRII has VBR options - I couldn't find them also. And I can't compare MMC with it since I think that software only works with ATI cards - well at least when I downloaded and installed it, capturing was not an options
