Hello again, all-I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on how I can add subtitles to captured AVIs. Most of the info on this site centers around grabbing subtitles off of DVDs. I was just wondering how I could add subtitles to a captured AVI...I have downloaded Sub Station Alpha, but it talks about Gen-Locks, Amigas, and .wav timing...is there a filter I can use for either VDub or AVISynth to do this??? Thanks in advance....

You have all you need. I am a newbie, so feel free to accept this answer with a grain of salt.

Run your video with a pad and pencil in hand. I use VDub, because I can stop it with the space bar, or use the slider.

When you get to where you want your first subtitle, stop. Write down the time and the subtitle (or mnemonic) on your pad, and how long you want the subtitle to last. Repeat until you finish your video.

Load Substation Alpha. Write in your first subtitle, go to the upper left hand corner of the program screen, put the start time of your subtitle, tab to the duration block and enter your duration time there. Hit Return, and the program updates the end time for you. Continue until you complete all your subtitles.

Save the file as an *.ssa file.

Go back to VDub. Open your filters. Use subtitler, or your favorite subtitling filter. Select your .ssa file, and either frameserve to your encoder, or save the the video as an .avi file.

Your new video file now has your subtitles -- Voila!
    Hello.
